Fishbase and Aristotle University

Teaching - Research, FishBase and Aristotle University

Because of the importance of FishBase as an educational, research and information tool we very early started to use FishBase as a teaching tool. Thus we use FishBase for (see also links to Courses for details):

1. Undergraduate courses (Vertebrate Zoology and Systematics, Ichthyology and Fisheries Biology) and
2. Graduate lectures (on Fisheries resources and Management, with assignments based exclusively on FishBase).

We also use FishBase for selecting issues or hypotheses to be tested for: BSc theses, MSc theses, PhD theses and other research work. The results have led to publications in international journals.

We are (or have) collecting all available information on Mediterranean and Balkan fish ecology and life history (i.e., maximum length and age, age, growth, length-weight relationships, von Bertalanffy parameters,  mortality, spawning period, reproduction, length and age at maturity, fecundity, feeding and trophic levels). These data are entered into FishBase. we are also contributing greek common names as well as fish photos from greek waters.
