Great Island pipeline plan

Tuesday November 01 2011

A PLANNING application for a multi-million euro pipeline to serve the Great Island Power Plant is expected to be lodged with An Bord Pleanála within a matter of months.

If given the go-ahead, this 44.5 km line will carry a gas supply to the proposed combined cycle gas turbine electricity generating plant at the Endesa-owned Great Island.

According Bord Gáis spokeswoman Kathleen O'sullivan, environmental assessments are currently being carried out and the next step in the planning process is to apply to An Board Pleanala for permission.

It is hoped that construction on this substantial development will begin in March 2012 and at its peak the project will employ 150 people.

The pipeline will comprise a spur line from the Cork-to-dublin pipeline on the existing gas transmission network in Co. Kilkenny to a new above-ground installation at the Great Island power plant.

The starting point of the proposed pipeline will be at the existing Bord Gáis Networks facility at Baunlusk, six kilometers south of Kilkenny City.
