Major Ranking and Invitation Events in Malta

Malta has always had a great snooker tradition but it was not until late 1994 that it hosted its first major professional tournament, the Rothmans Malta Grand Prix, originally a 12-man invitation event. This event was held every season till 2000/01 but the format varied and it was a full world ranking event in 1999/2000 for one season only. When it returned in 2000/1 as an invitation event twelve players played in four round robin groups initially with group winners going into the semi-finals.

The Euopean Open was first held in Malta in 1995/6 and returned on three further occasions. Details of this event can be found on a separate page.

The Malta Cup replaced the European Open in 2004/5 and was held as a full ranking event for the next three seasons.  A little bit of history was made in the 2006 event when, for the first time ever in ranking event, no English player reached the quarter final stage. In 2008 the Malta Cup lost its World Ranking status but was still held as an invitation event with 20 of the top players playing in four round robin groups with just the winners of each progressing to the semi finals.
