What's up with the high ceilings and big air contained therein? Pretty like cathedrals? Temples of learning? They are all crap unless they have really good books. Libraries are for books, right?

I spend a lot of time at Vassar College. The library might be pretty, but the crap they teach in that "school" is so far left even your readers would feel comfortable there.Four years of how to properly hate and belittle America. No wonder we have an America hater as our pres.now.That is what is considered "brainy"? I am sooooo glad to be getting old.Hope I die before we become europe the 2nd.
Didn't we fight to get away from their ways once?Hisory will repeat itself, and I don't want to see it.

Spent a lot of time in Suzzallo Libary (Go Huskies!) during my graduate days. The staircase up to the library is beautiful, but not as breathtaking as the library itself.

You missed the Powell Library at UCLA.

While we're here, let's nominate one for the worst: the Des Moines Public Library. Designed by British architect David Chipperfield, the library has been a major disappointment. Although the copper facade is a sight to behold, the inside of the building does not come near the expectations that are encouraged by the reflective exterior. The low-ceilinged entryway is pedantic and rather depressing, using unfinished concrete on the supportive pillars. And whoever heard of a two-stall capacity women's restroom set in a building that serves as the capitol of the state! I had such high hopes for this extremely expensive building, it cost millions and now the copper panels are falling. Next time, get someone local to design a public building in this part of the country! There's something to be said about the use of wood in the libraries that are featured here, they don't make them like that anymore! It's lovely to sit in a great old library and just peruse your way through the stacks!

Yeah, Gothic architecture is so UGLY and ELITIST. Put up pictures of boring stale modernist libraries instead, like the one at my [insert random college]!

Yet another "beautiful libraries" list that insists that beauty can only be found in baroque or gothic architecture. Ugh!

More intimate & cozy than the those selected, The Glasgow School of Art's Library, by Charles Rennie Macintosh, is a forward into 20th century architecture.

Beautiful yes. But beautiful does not mean 'Gothic.' Looked like a Harry Potter list of possible locations.

Oops! "at the University of Connecticut". I guess I should have spent more time
at The Twinkie...

When I was the University of Connecticut in the early 1990's, the Homer Babbidge Library was falling apart so badly that bricks were landing the quad. It got so bad that huge portions of the outside of the building were wrapped in plastic, to prevent people from being injured. We used to call it "The Twinkie".

So, my question is, why didn't it make this list?
