Bishop Justin Consecrated

31/10/2011

The new Bishop of Durham, the Rt Revd Justin Welby, was consecrated bishop on Friday 28 October by Archbishop Sentamu in York Minister

On a bright, sunny Autumn day, around 2,000 people shared in the special service, including many clergy and lay people who made the journey to York to support Justin and wish him well.

Bishop Justin was ordained bishop alongside the new Bishop of Penrith, the Rt Revd Robert Freeman who was formerly Archdeacon of Halifax.

Justin was presented by the Bishop of Liverpool, the Rt Revd James Jones, and the Rt Revd Sandy Millar, now retired who was formerly Vicar of Holy Trinity, Brompton where Justin and Caroline worshipped before heading north to Cranmer Hall in Durham in 1989.

The sermon was preached by the Rt Revd Dr Josiah Idowu Fearon, Bishop of Kaduna, Nigeria.
