Publication Type: Conference Paper/Unpublished Manuscript Review Method: Peer Reviewed Abstract: This paper examines how issues of feminism, marriage, resistance, and power are interrelated. In exploring the conceptualization of marriage as a patriarchal structure and studying how patriarchal power is experienced and resisted in marriage, I uncover how feminists make sense of their simultaneous location within marital discourse and feminist discourse of resistance. I look at the means of resistance feminists employ while remaining married. Finally, I discuss whether we need a new conception of marriage or if marriage continues to operate as a patriarchal structure of oppression. Using both qualitative and quantitative data, I argue that marriage is a structure in a state of transition from a patriarchal structure to one of shared resistance to patriarchy. I find that men have become partners and resist the domination of patriarchal power alongside women. Resistance occurs in crossing traditional gender boundaries inside the home and in the paid labor force. Social networks play a large role in resistance strategies. Several other themes emerged from the data indicating there are several paths of resistance and several forms of disciplinary power. Finally, I find evidence to suggest that way marriage is structured and experienced is changing. The result is an expanded conception of marriage.
