World Health Organization Philippines

The World Health Organization is the trusted authority in directing and coordinating health issues within the United Nations' structure. The main objective of the organization is “the attainment by all people of the highest possible level of health.” With the organization's dedication, everyone is sure to have a healthy living with the help of the World Health Organization. Their logo features the Rod of Asclepius which symbolizes the act of healing.

The organization's activities include efforts to control outbreaks of infectious diseases such as malaria, tubercolosis, pneumonia, SARS, HIV/AIDS, and H1N1. Aside from these diseases, WHO also sponsors programs to prevent people from having severe sicknesses like cancer, dengue, influenza, small pox and cholera. They support the innovation and distribution of safe and effective drugs, pharmaceutical  diagnostics, and vaccines. World Health Organization's first eliminated disease was the small pox that has been controlled in the year 1980 made possible with human effort. 

Because Philippines is a member of United Nations, there's a World Health Organization office that has been established here since 1951. As a matter of fact, Philippines was chosen as the headquarters of the regional office in the whole Western Pacific. World Health Organization is located at United Nations corner Taft Avenue, Ermita Manila, Philippines. The multinational organiztion coordinates with the Philippine government, Department of Health to be exact and other non-governmental organizations. Their main priorities are:

Environmental health;
Health promotion;
Strenghtening health management;
Sevelopment of human resources for health;
Exchange of information and experience and;
Eradication and control of selected diseases.

These priorities are still in the process of being innovated and distributed among the Filipino people.

One virus that tremendously brought fear to various nations in the world, was the H1N1 virus. It started late 2009 in Mexico which first infected herds of pig then eventually affected human health. It is a kind of flu that breaks down the barriers of one's immune system, affecting the well-being of a person. The virus was transferred here in the Philippines months later by someone who entered the country from another country.

It was a very critical stage in the human history because the Filipino people's health is at stake. People were affected by H1N1 were being monitored and isolated to keep the virus from spreading. Because of the disease, Philippine authorities banned the people who are migrating to the country from other countries being affected by the deadly virus. World Health Organization immediately issued precautions on how to be safe against the virus H1N1. Gladly, WHO together with DOH successfully informed the people about the disease and it was eliminated right away.

Today, World Health Organization continues to nurture Filipino people's lives by providing them the kind of help they need. One example of the organization's work is the Emergency and Humanitarian Action. This program ensures that every hospital in the country will be a safe haven for people who are needing medical and health assistance. Trainings and seminars for doctors, nurses and other hospital staff were held in purpose of boosting healthcare in the Philippines.

World Health Organization also helps the government in developing early warnings, disease surveillance and response system for climate change-sensitive diseases. They are putting up advocacies and health promotion for climate change and health so that people will be aware of the things that may affect their health.

The organization has the power to teach people  to be conscious about their health. They will remain true to the Filipino, but people must learn how to listen and  make take precautionary actions in taking care of their own body. By simply being aware and being knowledgeable on how to prevent diseases, people of the Philippines will be able to help the organization, and help themselves in preventing illnesses that will harm their family, friends, and most especially, themselves.
