Millfield Prep and Pre-Prep School for pupils aged 2-13

School Life at Millfield Prep Boarding

What the ISI Inspection Report says:

"The quality of boarding education is outstanding and fully supports the school's aim to provide excellent pastoral care for its pupils. Pupils clearly value the friendships engendered by sharing a dormitory but also have excellent friendships amongst day pupils and in boarding houses other than their own. The boarding houses are seen by pupils very much as home rather than an extension of school, and rules are ‘dimmed down', fostering a genuine family feel. With opportunities to take responsibilities and play a part in the smooth running of these ‘families', the additional opportunities for personal development are excellent."

What our pupils say:

"Your room is just like your bedroom at home - you can decorate it with your photos." Izabel (Year 4)

"It's a great way of making new friends." Thea (Year 7)

"You are never lonely - you always have friends with you." Erin and Rebecca (Year 8)

"Being a boarder is a great experience that you will remember for the rest of your life. You learn to become independent and more caring for others around you and you develop different living skills." Catherine and Helena (Year 7)

Five comfortable boarding houses

Millfield Preparatory School currently has approximately 150 boarders and 5 comfortable boarding houses. All the houses are either on or very close to the main campus. Each house has its own unique character and superb facilities indoors and outdoors. Each is single sex with age-appropriate bedrooms.

Friendly houseparents, assistants and matrons

The houses are run by Houseparents, usually a married couple, who aim to create a warm and relaxed family atmosphere for the boys and girls who are in their care. They are ably supported by a resident assistant and a visiting tutor who are also teaching members of staff and a host of house matrons. Houseparents are in regular contact with your child's Group Tutor and Head of Year.

Boarders are very happy to go ‘home' in the evenings, to do their prep, relax with friends and enjoy the comfort and security of their House. At the weekends there is never a dull moment and the children are spoilt for choice. There is always a full programme of organised games, activities and a great variety of trips.

Weekend Days Away

Millfield Preparatory has a flexible system whereby boarders may go out with parental permission on any weekend after school commitments are complete.

There are two long ‘exeat' weekends commencing at 4 pm on Friday afternoons in the Autumn and one in the Spring term. Each term there are also escorted ‘exeats' to London by coach, which stops at various locations en route.

"Being a boarder is a great experience that you will remember for the rest of your life. You learn to become independent and more caring for others around you and you develop different living skills". Catherine and Helena, both aged 12.
