Summary (English) |
The Act of September 15, 1789, c. XIV (1 Stat. 68-69) renames as the Department of State the Department of Foreign Affairs and renames the principal officer the Secretary of State. Assigns the Secretary recordkeeping and publication duties for laws. Recognizes as the valid seal of the United States the seal currently in use. Assigns the Secretary duties as keeper of the seal, prescribes use of the seal. States that the Secretary shall provide a seal of office for the Department as approved by the President. Assigns evidentiary weight to documents authenticated under the seal. Sets fees for making our and authenticating copies of records. Assigns recordkeeping functions for papers of the late Congress.
