The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, works with the Greater London Authority (GLA) Group to ensure Londoners get the most possible benefit from the 2012 Games.
The Mayor of London is Co-Chair of the Olympic Board, which oversees the 2012 project. He has particular responsibility for co-ordinating London’s City Operations programme, and for ensuring that Londoners benefit as much and as widely as possible from hosting the Games in 2012. Boris Johnson believes that the success of the Games will not simply be judged by the summer of 2012, but just as importantly, by its legacy.
Greater London Authority (GLA)
The GLA is the strategic government authority for London with responsibility for ensuring a better future for the capital, comprising the Mayor of London and the London Assembly. GLA staff support the work of the Mayor, helping his office develop and deliver strategies for the city. A dedicated team of staff also support the London Assembly to represent the interests of Londoners, as well as scrutinise the work of the Mayor.
Legacy
The Mayor of London is working to ensure that the Games are sustainable, inclusive and deliver lasting benefits to London and Londoners for generations to come.
In particular, the Mayor is committed to securing a viable and sustainable legacy from the London 2012 Games as part of the wider economic, social and environmental development of London over the next 25 years. His London plan identifies the regeneration of the Olympic Park and surrounding area, and the ambition to close the deprivation gap between the east London Boroughs and the rest of the city, as his most important regeneration priority for the next 25 years.
The Mayor was a founder member of the Olympic Park Legacy Company, which became the London Legacy Development Corporation in April 2012. This is inheriting all the assets, programmes and staff of the existing Olympic Park Legacy Company, but is under the sole control of the Mayor, whereas the previous company was jointly owned with Government.
City Operations
The Mayor of London is responsible for co-ordinating the London 2012 City Operations programme and delivering a number of its key elements such as the Team London Ambassadors, dressing the Host City, and an array of free cultural events and festivities throughout the capital.
The Mayor’s team is working closely with London’s Boroughs and public services to enable optimal service during the summer of 2012.
London & Partners
London & Partners is a not-for-profit public private partnership, funded by the Mayor of London and a number of London based commercial partners. London & Partners work in partnership with organisations across London and the world to deliver their mission and are working to maximise the tourism and business benefits to London from hosting the Games.
The agency was established in April 2011 in order to bring together the remits of the capital's promotional agencies: Think London, Study London and Visit London. The aim is to create a single promotional organisation for London that can speak with one voice to all audiences in the UK and internationally.
Transport for London
Transport for London, also part of the GLA Group and therefore under the Mayor’s direction, has invested billions of pounds to deliver a transport legacy for east London, marking a sustained increase in transport investment for the area.
The Olympic Park Regeneration Steering Group (OPRSG)
The Mayor of London also chairs the Olympic Park Regeneration Steering Group (OPRSG) which currently provides direction of the Olympic legacy agenda for east and south east London.
OPRSG is made up of the Mayor of London Boris Johnson, Olympics Minister Hugh Robertson, Communities and Local Government Minister Bob Neill, Leader of Greenwich Council Chris Roberts, Mayor of Hackney Jules Pipe, Mayor of Newham Sir Robin Wales, Mayor of Tower Hamlets Lutfur Rahman and Leader of Waltham Forest Chris Robbins.
