State Median Household Income Patterns: 1990-2010

Real median household income in the United States fell between the 2009 and 2010, decreasing by 2.2 percent from $51,190 to $50,046. These data are based on estimates from the American Community Survey 2009 and 2010 1-year estimates. The interactive ranking table presented below shows measures of 2009 and 2010 median household income by state. Use the ranking table to rank/compare median household income patterns.

Household income includes income of the householder and all other people 15 years and older in the household, whether or not they are related to the householder. The median is point that divides the household income distribution into halves, one half with income above the median and the other with income below the median. The median is based on the income distribution of all households, including those with no income. The table presents 2009 Median Household Income (MHI) as reported in the ACS 2009 ($MHI09 in table) and adjusted to 2010 dollars (Real $MHI09). Examine change and percent change based on current or real (both based on 2010 dollars) basis. MHI data for 1989 and 1999 are from the 1990 Census and 2000 Census.
