The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) and the London Organising Committee (LOCOG) are already working closely with industry to ensure that materials including timber, aggregates and concrete are sustainably sourced where they are needed across the project.
Both organisations now want to ensure they meet the highest environmental and social standards for the PVC materials used for temporary buildings such as the Basketball Arena, and for the temporary parts of permanent venues such as the Olympic Stadium.
PVC has a variety of uses because it is strong, malleable, fire-resistant and lightweight.
London 2012 will work with industry to try and recycle the material and require PVC suppliers or manufacturers put in place ‘take back’ systems to ensure the PVC will be reused or recycled after 2012.
ODA Head of Sustainable Development Dan Epstein said: ‘As we have done in the past with materials such as timber and concrete, we want to use the opportunity of hosting the London 2012 Games to work with industry to set new standards. In this case this may help move the industry towards more sustainable manufacture, use and disposal of PVC fabrics.’
