I guess if that is so, they don't like washing dirty linen in public.

Formaldehyde, a chemical compound typically associated with the preservation of human corpses, was discovered in cendol, a sweet glutinous rice drink, being sold at two Carrefour supermarkets in Central Jakarta, BeritaJakarta.com reported.

The formaldehyde, in a diluted form known as formalin, was discovered during routine Ramadan raids being carried out by the Central Jakarta Livestock and Fishery Sub-Department at Carrefours Cempaka Mas and Cempaka Putih on Monday.

The illegal use of formalin persists as a preservative in food items like tofu and chicken in Indonesia, though it is a known carcinogen. In 2005, the capital was rocked by a widespread panic when it was discovered that approximately 60 percent of Jakarta’s noodle shops were serving dishes laced with the substance.

On Monday, Sarjoni, an official with the food safety agency, said the only food product found to contain formalin during the raids had been the cendol.

“We examined various goods and groceries such as beef, chicken, fish, cendol, grass jelly, pickles, tofu and processed foods. As a result, only cendol was found that positively contained 10 ppm [parts per million] of formalin,” he said.

However, the officers did not seize the tainted food product, he said, instead issuing a warning to the stores’ managers and telling them not to sell the offending goods.

He also said the store managers were told to run periodic tests on food products. “Lab tests are important to ensure the quality of the goods. We ask it to be conducted every three months,” he said.
