Statement of Significance (as of designation - July 6, 1992):
Columbia is one of the last classic excursion steamers in the country. Designed by Frank E. Kirby, one of the leading naval architects of the time, she was built at the Detroit Dry Dock Company shipyard in 1902, and was used by the Detroit & Windsor Ferry Company to carry passengers to Belle Island. This vessel represents the typical propeller-driven excursion steamer of the turn of the century, a type once found in many parts of the country.

Condition:
Several years ago the boat was shrink wrapped to provide protection from the elements but the wrap is coming undone causing severe physcial deterioration. The boat resides in Michigan but the owners are located in New York.

An assessment is being done to create a budget for repairs.
