A RESOLUTION


Recognizing the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, on April 12, 1861, Confederate troops fired on Fort Sumter, South Carolina, marking the start of the Civil War; and

WHEREAS, at the conclusion of the Civil War in 1865, there had been over 1 million casualties with over 620,000 soldiers lost; and

WHEREAS, Georgia sent 100,000 soldiers to battle during the Civil War and lost 18,253; and

WHEREAS, six United States Presidents fought in the Civil War and include Ulysses S. Grant, Rutherford B. Hayes, James A. Garfield, Chester A. Arthur, Benjamin Harrison, and William McKinley; and

WHEREAS, numerous governors of the State of Georgia served with distinction during the Civil War, including Thomas H. Ruger, James M. Smith, Alfred H. Colquitt, Alexander A. Stephens, Henry D. McDaniel, John B. Gordon, Allen D. Candler, and Nathaniel E. Harris; and

WHEREAS, the Civil War pitted family members against one another and was a turning point in this nation's and state's history.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body recognize the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War and honor the lives and memories of the many lives lost as a result of the war.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to make available an appropriate copy of this resolution to members of the public and the press.
