Ramanavami, decades-old devotional treat

Ambika Nagaraj, TNN Apr 2, 2009, 05.31pm IST

It's Ramanavami, the day that marks the birth of Lord Sri Rama. And starting Friday, the temples in the city go all colourful. If Ramayana, devotional songs and bhajans are musically recited at few places of worship, there will be week-long cultural events at few other places.

While Bidaram Sri Prasanna Seetha Ramamandira will be hosting its 93rd Ramanavami Uthsava this season, the Krishnamurthypuram Ramamamandira is hosting the same for about 80 years now.

K S N Prasad, secretary of Sri Ramaseva Charitable Trust, that has been hosting Ramanavami Sangeetothsava for 15 years said, "We have been hosting the Ramanavami music festival at Sri Prasanna Parvathi Kalyana Mantap in V V Mohalla for over 15 years now." Several noted singers will be invited to perform at the event that attracts hordes of devotees each year. While some temples host the event before the fest, others host it from the day of Ramanavami. And as in the previous years, music aficionados and devotees can look forward to grand musical events this season too.
