May 9 -- Henry Boucha got his hockey start in Warroad, Minn. He later played professionally with the Detroit Red Wings.
So he knows all about the rich traditions in those self-proclaimed hockey communities.
While Warroad has raised and groomed six hockey Olympians, Detroit was part of The Original Six teams in the National Hockey League. While Warroad has won amateur Allan Cups, Detroit has won professional Stanley Cups. While Warroad is nicknamed Hockeytown, Detroit is called, well, Hockeytown.
That's right. Warroad, which has used the moniker for at least the past four decades, no longer has a lock on it. In fact, the only ones who have a right to it are the Red Wings. The Red Wings have copyrighted it. Hockeytown became a registered trademark owned by the Detroit Red Wings last June.
