Actress Ko Hyun-jung returns to the big screen in the new action/comedy “Miss Conspirator.” Ko has typically played the role of strong female figures in positions of power, most notably seen in “Queen Seondeok” (2009) and “Daemul” (2010), in which she played Korea’s first female president.

This time, however, Ko’s role has taken a 180-degree turn. In “Miss Conspirator” she plays a disoriented woman with a social phobia.

General reaction to the film after its first screening was not too enthusiastic. But despite the criticism, Ko’s stardom alone has attracted significant attention. The JoongAng Ilbo sat down with Ko on Wednesday to find out what she hides under her charismatic appearance.

In the middle of the interview she kept saying, “Am I doing this right? If not, let me know. Tell me if I am saying something strange.” Perhaps the timid role she plays in this film is not mismatching after all.



Q. Is this the first commercial film you’ve starred in?

A. Actually it’s just the first in three years. Last time was when I starred in “Actresses” in 2009. When I received the scripts for “Miss Conspirator,” I read them very carefully because the producers were close friends of mine. I felt like this was the last chance for me to play characters like Chun Su-ro. If I get older, I can’t play this kind of character anymore. So I took the chance. I’ve always played characters that are strong and have charisma. Chun Su-ro is a nerdy and timid character, which is fairly new to me.

You’ve played mostly charismatic characters in the past?

Since my comeback to film and television following the divorce [with Chung Yong-jin, vice chairman of Shinsegae Group] people treated me like a real adult. I guess it is obvious because I’ve married and have children. But I felt like I was not yet a complete adult.

I was still immature and unskilled in certain aspects. But in order to live up to that image people have of me, I had to pretend to be a charismatic and a strong person. I simply had to remind myself to be strong. But this time it was difficult because I had to take out the timid side of me that was hiding inside.



Did you perhaps want to change the image people have of you through this film?

I am not the type of person who plans ahead and follows through with plans. I personally don’t like changing myself either. However, I do want to show everything when I work in a film. Regardless of the types of characters I play, I don’t change myself to act that character. I want to show everything that I have to play one character.




Did you find any similarities between you and Chun Su-ro, the character you played?

I think so, in some aspects. I do not have a social phobia, but I don’t really go out that often, either. That felt like a similarity. It was helpful in acting it out in the film.



There was a director change while it was in production. Were there difficulties while filming?

Yes, there were some difficulties we had to face during the production. Those difficult times strengthened me and gave me the sense of responsibility to endure to the end. It had to be finished, and we did it.



Was there any particular scene that was difficult to play?

Chun Su-ro is a disoriented person. If I exaggerate my actions it may seem prejudiced toward disoriented people. The difficult task I had was to act without giving people any uncomfortable feelings.

고현정(41)은 세다. 드라마 ‘선덕여왕’의 미실, 드라마 ‘대물’의 여자 대통령, 후배들을 눈빛만으로 제압하는 영화 ‘여배우들’ 등등, 대중문화 속의 고현정이 그를 그렇게 보도록 만들었다. 세고, 강하고, 카리스마 넘치는. 그런데 그가 공황장애를 가진, 조금은 촌스럽고 지질한 여자 천수로가 됐다. 21일 개봉하는 코미디 영화 ‘미쓰고’에서다.

언론 시사회 후 반응은 그리 뜨겁지 않은 상태. 캐릭터 천수로의 코믹함을 살리는 데 치중해 영화 전반의 스토리가 엉성하다는 지적이 나왔다. 그럼에도 ‘미쓰고’가 주목받는 이유는, 고현정 때문이다. 그를 20일 서울 사간동에서 만났다.

　그는 인터뷰 중간 중간 “이렇게 말해도 되나요” “이상하면 이상하다고 해주세요”라고 했다. 말도 느렸다. 자기 허점을 숨기지 않는 모습, 마냥 세게 보이는 여성에게도 이런 면이 있었구나, 말하자면 ‘나른한 매력’의 발견이었다.

　- 첫 상업영화다.

　“영화 ‘여배우들’(2009) 이후 3년 여 만이다. 나를 스무 살 때부터 알고 지내던 친구들(제작사 대표 등)이 건네준 시나리오여서 매우 애정을 가지고 봤다. 천수로라는 엉뚱한 캐릭터를 더 나이 먹으면 못할 것 같았다. 언제나 ‘센’ 역할이 들어왔던 터라 촌스럽고 소심한 수로가 반가웠다.”

　- 고현정을 위한 제목 같다.

　“나 때문에 일부러 지은 것은 아니다. 서로 이야기하는 과정에서 우리 영화가 앞으로 쑥쑥 잘 나갔으면 좋겠다는 의미에서 ‘고(Go)’를 붙인 거다. (이혼하고) 돌아와서 미스(Miss)가 된 나랑도 맞는다는 얘기가 나왔다. 뜻이 나쁘지 않아서 그대로 ‘미쓰고’가 됐다.”

　- 늘 카리스마 넘치는 역만 맡아왔는데.

　“컴백해서 다시 일을 시작했을 때 많은 분들이 나를 굉장한 어른처럼 대해줬다. 결혼도 했었고 애도 낳았으니까. 서툴고 미숙한 점이 많아서 불안한 마음이 컸는데 다들 그렇게 봐주니까 어쩔 수 없이 강하게 밀고 나갔던 것 같다. 이제 와서 ‘강한 척 했다’라고 하면 좀 그렇지만. (웃음) 그래서 그런 (강한) 역을 맡으면 집에서 나올 때 한 번만 마음 먹고 나가면 됐다. 내가 살아온 시간의 도움을 받아 ‘미실’로 발동을 걸고 나오는 거다. 그런데 이번에는 달랐다. 내 안의 소심함을 끄집어내는 작업은 옷을 벗었다 입었다 하는 과정이었다. 힘들었다.”

　“뭔가를 계획하고 전략을 세우고 실행하는 스타일이 아니다. 모험심 넘치는 성격도 아니고. 다만 이 영화 제의가 들어왔을 때 나의 연약한 모습을 보여주고 싶은 욕심은 좀 있었다. (웃음) 어떤 역할이든 나에게 올 때 나를 100% 다 꺼내서 쓰자는 생각을 하고 산다. ‘이번에는 이렇게 변신해야지’ ‘이런 모습을 보여주겠어’라는 다짐이 아니라.”

　- 실제로 극중 수로와 비슷한 면이 있나.

　“어떤 면에서는 그렇다. 내가 장애까지는 아니지만 밖에 잘 안 나간다. (웃음) 그럴 때 느낀 감정들을 연기할 때 뽑아내서 극대화시킨 거다.”

　- 중간에 내부사정으로 감독이 교체되는 등 영화촬영에 우여곡절이 많았다던데.

　“맞다. 힘든 과정이 있었다. 그래서 이 영화가 하나의 작품으로 인정받고, 상영이 되는 게 내겐 책임감과도 같았다. 이번 영화가 첫 작품인 스태프들이 많았다. 거의 8개월간 함께하며 정이 쌓인 이들이다. 꼭 완성되어야 했고, 상영하게 돼 좋다. 흥행이 되면 더 좋고.”

　- 힘든 장면이 있었다면.

　“수로가 공황장애 환자다. 그걸 영화에서 조금만 과장되게 표현해도 정말 공황장애를 앓는 분들에 대한 편견을 심어줄 수 있을 것 같았다. 그래서 표현의 정도를 어느 정도로 해야할 지 고민을 많이 했고, 힘들었다.”

　- 이름을 건 토크쇼 ‘고쇼’(SBS) 진행도 하고 있는데.


　“처음에는 ‘예능 가서도 잘 하네’ ‘역시 고현정’이란 소리 듣고 싶었다. 그런데 지적을 많이 받고 있다. 한 번 말을 시작하면 문장을 못 끝낸다든가 하는 문제가 있다. (웃음) ‘고쇼’가 아니면 만날 수 없는 사람들 만날 수 있어서 좋다. 인터뷰라는 게 상대에 대해 많은 애정을 가져야 되는 거더라. 즐기고 있다.”
