John Higgins hits maximum and comes up trumps in Shanghai Masters

John Higgins stormed back from a heavy deficit to lift the Shanghai Masters title with a thrilling 10-9 victory over Judd Trump in the final.

Despite a fantastic 147 break, Higgins was trailing 7-2 at the mid-session interval in the best-of-19 tussle as Trump looked odds-on to avenge his defeat to the Scot in the 2011 World Championship final.

However, Higgins reeled off six frames in a row and although Trump was able to force a decider, it was the 37-year-old who triumphed.

"To beat Judd from 7-2 down is unbelievable, I can't explain how it feels because I'm shell-shocked," Higgins told worldsnooker.com after claiming the £75,000 winner's prize.

"In the first session he steam-rollered me, but I still felt confident that if I came back tonight and played my best I would have a small chance.

"To beat Judd when he was playing that well must be one of my best wins ever."

Trump warmed to his task immediately and nearly made a dream start after just missing out on a maximum himself.

After sinking 14 reds and blacks in the opening frame, he missed the 15th red.

With breaks of 80, 74 and 111 the 23-year-old Bristol potter moved 5-0 ahead, only to have to stay in his seat during the next frame as Higgins cleared up in thrilling style.

For the Scot it was the sixth 147 of his career, but Trump took two of the next three frames to remain firmly in contention.

The reigning UK Championship holder needed just three frames for victory but was then left stunned as Higgins superbly fought back.

The four-time world champion claimed six consecutive frames to take an 8-7 advantage and completely change the complexion of the match although Trump, to his credit, stopped the rot with a break of 105.

The players then split the next two frames, both of which were cagey affairs, to ensure a decider and although Trump had the upper hand following a break of 35, he lost position and Higgins fully capitalised to take his maiden Shanghai title.

Trump said: "John's the best I've ever played against. He played so well tonight and didn't give me a look-in until it was 7-7.

"In the last frame I was a bit unlucky not to get on the black. He took on a risky red, potted it and did well to clear up.

"Going into tonight I knew John was a great battler. I've played him before and been well in front and he's come back at me."
