The University of California—Los Angeles, commonly referred to as UCLA, is located in the Westwood neighborhood of L.A., just five miles from the Pacific Ocean. UCLA guarantees housing for two years. The university has a number of student media groups including a newspaper, magazine, and radio and TV stations. The UCLA Bruins compete in the Pac-12 Conference of NCAA’s Division I and are well known for their successful men’s and women’s water polo teams. The Bruins’ football team plays its home games at the famous Rose Bowl stadium in nearby Pasadena.
UCLA encompasses the College of Letters and Sciences and a number of graduate schools and programs, including the highly ranked Anderson School of Management, Graduate School of Education and Information Studies, Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science, School of Law, David Geffen School of Medicine, School of Public Affairs, School of Nursing, and School of Public Health. UCLA also has a prestigious School of Theater, Film & Television and School of Dentistry. The Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center is one of the top-ranked hospitals in the country. Notable alumni include former NBA star Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles, and actor Sean Astin, best know for his portrayal of Sam Gamgee in The Lord of the Rings film trilogy.

UCLA offers immediate, first-year access to a virtually limitless selection of studies that only a world-class university can provide. UCLA's strength is its size, allowing for unimagined diversity, unmatched breadth and depth of scholarship, and limitless possibility -- 127 majors, 3,600 undergraduate courses taught by more than 4,000 faculty, and more than 800 student organizations. More than 30 of UCLA's academic programs rank among the top 20 in their fields, representing all the most popular undergraduate majors. Yet almost 70% of undergraduate classes have fewer than 30 students. Two hundred Fiat Lux Seminars taught by top faculty provide a small-group setting and give freshmen priority enrollment. The undergraduate experience can begin with participation in a year-long Freshman Cluster, a stimulating team-taught exploration of one of ten challenging interdisciplinary topics. Undergraduates can conduct research in close collaboration with UCLA scholars as early as their freshman year. The Honors Program provides an enriched educational experience through interdisciplinary seminars, engaging classroom presentations, individualized mentoring, and special honors courses designed to encourage and reward critical thinking. At UCLA, community service is a cornerstone of undergraduate education; students can participate in local, state, or national programs that integrate volunteer opportunities with academic coursework. In 2010-11, 28,000 UCLA students performed community service. UCLA encourages students to study abroad, and more than 2,000 do so each year. UCLA offers more arts and cultural programs than many cities, and students can choose from more than 1,000 events annually. UCLA students are known for their optimism and sense of possibility.
