Tea
Tea
Enjoyed the world over, Malawian tea is sure to satisfy even the most refined connoisseur. Tea is the second biggest export crop of Malawi. Chances are that you have already tasted Malawian tea yourself without knowing it – the incredibly high quality and relatively low price of Malawian tea means that tea producers abroad will often mix tea from Malawi with lesser quality teas leaves to augment the taste of their beverages. Naturally, the taste of Malawian tea by itself is nothing less than exquisite.

Cichlids
Fish
Lake Malawi is home to a seemingly endless supply of delicious fish, many of which are unique to the area. When visiting Malawi, be sure to indulge in the sardine-like usipa and utaka, which you will often see drying on racks within villages around Lake Malawi. The salmon-like mpasa and large kampango are also well enjoyed throughout Malawi. However, by far the favorite fish of every visitor to Malawi is the bream-like chambo, which is sure to please every palate.

Nsima
Nsima
The one food not to be missed when in Malawi is the ubiquitous nsima. Made from ground corn, nsima is a staple food throughout much of Malawi. Nsima is usually served with “relishes,” or side dishes, which often consist of a meat dish and a vegetable dish. It is not unheard of for a Malawian to enjoy nsima for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

We hope that you will be able to experience fine Malawi cuisine for yourself someday soon.
