PS3 overtakes Xbox 360 in worldwide shipments - Report

International Data Corporation study states Sony's home console (77 million) passes Microsoft's (76 million) in 2012, despite launching a year later.

The PlayStation 3 is now the reigning king of the high-definition console market, if one report proves to be accurate. The International Data Corporation this week published a study that states worldwide PS3 shipments (77 million) surpassed global Xbox 360 shipments (76 million) in December 2012. Notably, the PS3 launched a year after the Xbox 360.

The IDC's Worldwide Video Game and Entertainment Console Hardware and Packaged Software 2012-2016 Forecast also concluded that, despite what the naysayers may be predicting, the disc-based home console market will remain viable through at least 2014.

"The console ecosystem is in a state of flux since these platforms need to support an ever-growing array of non-gaming features and services at the same time that game distribution and monetization is moving in a digital direction," said IDC gaming research manager Lewis Ward in a statement. "At the same time, it doesn't appear that alternative platforms--set-top boxes from cable companies, Web-connected smart TVs, and so on--are positioned to materially disrupt the trajectory of the 'big 3' console OEMs in 2013 or 2014. Discs will remain the console game revenue mainstay for years to come."

Though the IDC believes disc-based systems will remain the main revenue generator for consoles in the years ahead, the group does expect the volume of packaged goods shipped to contract by 3 percent every year through 2016. This is a result of a shift in consumer spending behavior toward digital channels, the firm said.

The study also predicts that Nintendo's new Wii U console will "find an audience," with global shipments exceeding 50 million by the end of 2016. If the Wii U does achieve that mark, it will not even come close to edging out the original Wii, which to date has sold more than 97 million units.

"2011 and 2012 were tough for many console game disc developers and publishers," Ward said. "With the advent of eighth-generation consoles, starting with the Wii U, historical norms strongly imply that game disc revenue will stop bleeding in 2013 and rise substantively in 2014."

Not sure if anybody will still read this article, but the PS3 has NOT sold more than the Xbox 360.

Around mid-way through 2012 Sony started combining PS2 with PS3 when reporting on PS3 sales/shipped numbers.  So when they report 77 million shipped, that number also includes PS2.

Don't believe me?  Well take at look at Sony's own official documents.  It's their Q3 FY2012 Consolidated Financial Results (ending December 31st, 2012).

www.sony.net/SonyInfo/IR/financial/fr/12q3_sonypre.pdf

Once you have the PDF open, do a search for 'ps2' and see the numbers yourself.

Realistically Sony ha shipped about 74 or 75 million PS3's, which means they could not have sold that many.

Xbox 360 has sold more consoles globally than the PS3.
Xbox 360 has more games/titles than the PS3 (3300 vs 2700 respectively)
Of the top 50 most sold games world-wide the Xbox360 has 7, while the PS3 has 3.
When comparing the top 20 games available on both Xbox360 and PS3, the Xbox360 outsells the PS3 on almost every single title when looking at volume sold.

Lastly, Xbox 360 has seen more than 300% growth compared to the previous gen, the original Xbox.  Meanwhile, PS3 has only seen about 50% growth compared to the PS2.

I own all 3 consoles. The real winner is me. lol!! XBox 360 is king in the USA, which is all that matter to Microsoft I'm sure. If Microsoft could actually compete in Japan they would have a better chance, but Nintendo and Sony own Japan's market and it would take a miracle and act of God for Microsoft to sell 5-7 million consoles in that region.

By the time The Last Of Us comes out, The PS3 will have overtaken the 360 in worldwide sales. In fact, by the time the PS4 comes out the PS3 will have substantially closed the gap on the Wii. This time next year the gap between PS3 and Wii will be around 15 million. That too will be closed down over the remaining months of 2014.

Sony reigns supreme... AGAIN!!!

To all the people in 06 who said the PS3 was a failure I'm sure Sony accepts your apology.

However that was 06 and its now 2013 - we need something new. Not Spongebob new (Wii U) but decent new.

@piedude67 What do you mean. It's perfectly rational for anonymous people to abuse each other on the internet based purely on the console that was probably first bought for them by their parents. The fact that they have no shares in the companies, no real stake in how either of them do and are basing their puerile comments on the fact that their console is the greatest ever just because THEY own one. sounds fine to me.

well, it only makes sense that it surpassed because by now a lott people who originally bought a xbox/ps3 end up buying the other a couple years later.  So if the xbox had been ahead, and now a bunch of people have both, they should be about even.  Add to that the people in Japan and sony should be (is) winning

Finally PS3 will overtake Wii .

Bgrngod

@janejp PS3 passed the 360 according to this article.  It still has a LOOONG way to go to catch up to the Wii, even with the WiiU out and slowing down Wii sales.

Do you really think the PS3 will sell another 30 million and catch up?  Unlikely.

Still a long way to go to meet or even surpass the sales figures on the PS2

BUT PS3 HAS NO GAMES? Seriously though, as a pc gamer that forces my games to run at 60fps. Playing any sort of game on the ps3 hurts my brain (talking to you especially Borderlands 2), and I can't use my monitor's native resolution because the xbox can't even run 1080p, and when the ps3 tries it stutters like crazy. In response, I've sold all my multi-platform games and re-bought them on steam (for less than I sold my used copies for, mind you), and couldn't be happier. Both consoles are extremely outdated.  have clunky interfaces, terrible online services, and a lack of downloadable games and content. I think they ended up helping the PC market by stagnating the console market with garbage hardware and overpriced games.

godzillavskong
godzillavskong

@anfunny Really? You came here to vent? "playing any sort of game on the ps3 hurts my brain"??? Seriously? I bet you hate a lot of those classic games, which are on the legacy platforms, that have a hard time getting to 30fps? What about when pc games crash, forcing you to try and find the update, sometimes taking weeks before a fix is found? The PC isn't without it's flaws when it comes to gaming either.

Seems to me this whole 'disc' console thing has to be part of the reason the PC is quickly regaining its position as the gaming platform of choice. I have an Xbox 360 and PS3 but it has honestly been nearly a year since I've bought a game for them. I use my 360 for Netflix and streaming through Plex media server or playing a DVD now and then. Why? because I have a good PC with a GTX 670... I purchased an xbox 360 controller for it and could not be happier.

I think both Sony and Microsoft made a huge mistake not rolling out some better hardware and encouraging all developers to make their games available through downloadable content. I may still be in the minority but to me the disc thing feels tired, old, and a pain to keep all organized, clean, and even spin up all the time.

I'm having a hard time seeing myself jumping on the new consoles unless they have some seriously solid exclusives. JMO... a year ago I was more console but now it is just a media player for the most part.

mark_unix
mark_unix like.author.displayName like.author.displayName 2 Like

i can't imagine what they live will do for the sale of the PS3, the difference between the xbox360 and PS3 is that Sony has all the exclusives you'd want and Microsoft has absolutely nothing but a bunch of shooter crap.

Sony will always reach 100 million sales before Microsoft <~ what i said when the xbox360 launched (lol@afterwards).

godzillavskong
godzillavskong

@mark_unix It's all about preferences. I enjoy the 360 exclusives better, although they have dried up a bit lately. Now by the time Sony reaches 100 million, Microsoft will have already launched their next system, therefore leaving that gen to Sony alone, since Nintenod already jumped ship(sorta). Heck, I think Sony will have released their PS4 before the PS3 even sniffs 100 million!

Albaficas

@godzillavskong what exclusives xbox have lol except halo, gears and forza lol ?

at least sony has exclusives for any type of gamers and release them yearly unlike MS who simply put a middle finger you know where  since they brought kinect

I personally am bored of the PS3 (same goes for xbox). I use it as a media centre more than a games console and it's just not cutting the mustard any more. Roll on next gen because I'm curious to see what the costs are going to be, the capabilities and the innovation (if any) for the new game types there will be.

"shipments", how many of those consoles are still on store shelves collecting dust LOL. My PS3 only turns on for blu ray movies. PC rig handles the rest, while the xbot does the majority of the console gaming for me.... doesn't mean it does for everyone else. Just my opinion.

I am dead chuffed to see the PS3 overtake! There are those fan boys out there that, when you try and state the greatness of the PS3, would always fall back on that 1 weak argument that the 360 had sold more and act as if that was the final say in the matter. I have always said the PS3 has sold faster but just that the XBOX had a head start, finally there is proof to back that up. Don't get me wrong I love and own both consoles and only favor the PS3 due to having been a PlayStation gamer since the first PS. But despite the 360's slightly superior performance (that I'm willing to admit) in my opinion there are so many ways in which the PS3 is a far superior machine all in all* and I am glad to see it regain the crown (among the more hardcore consoles) that the PS2 wore proudly for so many years.

*For instance, Sony's online is free while MS charges, PS+ is just awesome with the constant stream of amazing free content, MS charges for loads of features and accessories that come free with the PS3, the home screen and interface is sleek and mature on the PS3 but childish looking on the 360, the analog sticks are shorter on 360 leaving less room for precision (in racing games and FPS's), and MS rely on pumping out the same couple of exclusives over and over while PS3 innovates and has a wide array of great exclusives with more arriving all the time.

Well done Sony, great to see you back on top (although no offence Microsoft, the 360 is awesome too :)

oisbush

@TommyT456 I can see where you're coming from with all that, and for the most part I agree with you, but PS+ is absolutely shit, once your subscription runs out you lose everythiing that you bought with its benefits till you renew your subscription

In overall numbers the Wii clearly spanked MS and Sony, but those two companies had better games. People just lost interest in the Wii except holiday season when its was "kid" friendly.

I guess Sony could take this as good news considering it was behind most of this generations race. Better late than never...

nedrith

@WolfGrey @decoy1978 Indeed and behind by who's estimation.  360 had a year long head start before the PS3 was even released.  6 years(7 maybe?) later they are now ahead.  I know when I ran estimated numbers about 2 years ago the PS3 was ahead by quite a bit.   This was of course calculated in a fair way to support the 360: Removing the first year of the 360's sales and then another calculation of removing the last year of the 360's sales.  Both calc's put the PS3 ahead.

I bought the PS3 slim for the better exclusives and free online MP. Plus at the time there were still a lot of RROD's and I wanted to avoid it.

Personally, I had a better experience with the XBOX 360. No mandatory game-installs, lively online community, and the games ran quickly and smoothly.

...That experience was short-lived, for my XBOX suffered from the RROD less than 2 years after I purchased the console..

Coincidentally, college started, and I lost interest in gaming outside of my high laptop I purchased in 2009...

I recently purchased a PS3, and is loving every bit of it. They need to improve on the online community. Package headsets and free Playstation Plus subscriptions, Sony. They also need to give us an incentive to installing games. It's more of a memory consumption opportunity for me, as I see no real difference in waiting 20 minutes for an update or installation when I can't even run the game on the console without a disc. Just rid the feature all together, please.

Bgrngod
Bgrngod

@JtAgentX I too had a much better experience with the 360.  The vast majority of my games are for it, but I have scooped up most of the PS3 exclusives and enjoyed them immensely.

Last night was the perfect summary for what drives me nuts about the PS3 though.  I finally opened up Heavy Rain and tossed it in....

Hey look.. a 110 minute "update".  Fun times.

BlackBaldwin

@JtAgentX

I agree with you on the mandatory game install on the ps3.  That has to be the only beef I have had with the system really since I have a pretty large libarery of games I don't really have enough space on my ps3 to have them all downloaded on my HD inwhich is a big issue with me honestly...

oisbush

@BlackBaldwin @JtAgentX my bro has a ps3 but its only 40 gig and he had about 60 games in his library so he wanted to keep the model as there was nothing damaged or anything like that so he went as far as getting both internal and external hard-drives that were compatible with the ps3 and he ended up with 200gig and in the end it was about ?100 cheaper than buying a new unit
