Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said Tuesday that Sidney Crosby, the Penguins captain, was discharged from UPMC Presbyterian hospital in Oakland on Monday. Crosby underwent surgery late Saturday to repair a broken jaw.
He is out indefinitely, though general manager Ray Shero said the Penguins hope to learn more about a recovery timeframe this week.
Crosby was injured Saturday afternoon on his first shift in a home win over the New York Islanders. A shot by defenseman Brooks Orpik was deflected and caught Crosby near the mouth.
He remains in good spirits and is trying to maintain his caloric intake by drinking nutritional shakes.
The lower jaw was fractured and repaired with a metal plate that ultimately will need to be removed after the season. Crosby's jaw is not wired together. Had it been, he likely would have missed at least six weeks.
If he does not contract a postoperative infection, there is hope within the Penguins' organization that Crosby will play when the Stanley Cup playoffs begin April 30.
• The so-called Blue Jerseys of Doom are done. The Penguins were scheduled to wear their alternate uniforms — dark blue ones that debuted at the 2011 Winter Classic at Heinz Field — but instead dressed in their home blacks against Buffalo at Consol Energy Center on Tuesday night. The alternates were worn when Crosby was injured Saturday and also when he received a concussion at that Classic in 2011. Center Evgeni Malkin was injured, also with a concussion, during a game when the Penguins donned the alternate uniforms Feb. 22.
• Defenseman Kris Letang skated with strength and conditioning coach Mike Kadar before a morning practice session, but he missed a third consecutive game because of a broken toe.
• Root Sports Pittsburgh set a ratings record for its Saturday broadcast of the Penguins-Islanders game. The matinee generated a 16.6 rating, as reported by Nielsen Media Research. Fourteen of the top 20 highest-rated regular-season Penguins games on Root Sports have occurred this season.
