One of the reasons for the appeal of Milan’s universities lies in the high level of research and innovation that is produced not only in the universities themselves, but also in public and private research centres.
Significantly, in compliance with the Lisbon Strategy guidelines, the driving force of research and development work, in terms of expenditure, is industry (70%), followed by the university system (20%).
The patenting business also produces excellent results in Milan. The most innovative sectors in Milan in terms of registered patents are electronic engineering, chemicals and biotechnology.
