PlayStation 4 devs required to support Vita Remote Play - Report

All PS4 games, with the exception of PlayStation Eye titles, required to support Remote Play, suggests report.

PlayStation 4 developers are being required to include support for Sony's PS Vita Remote Play function in their upcoming games, according to a new report on Digital Foundry.

The only games excluded from Remote Play support will be those that use the PlayStation 4 camera, according to Digital Foundry's "trusted PlayStation 4 developer source with a proven track record."

The move, if true, would help bolster the library of the PS Vita, as well as offering functionality integral to Nintendo's Wii U console.

Unlike with the PlayStation 3, Remote Play is supposed on the PlayStation 4 at an operative system level, allowing developers to utilise the service without making concessions to the speed of their software. The service works by rendering the game as video and transmitting the images wirelessly over the users' local network to the PS Vita in a fashion similar to cloud-powered game services like OnLive.

Sony, which purchased cloud-streaming technology Gaikai last year, showed PlayStation 4 platformer Knack running on the Vita via Remote Play when it unveiled its next-generation console back in February.

Well isn't that a crafty ploy to get vita owners to buy a ps4 lol.  Justify your previous purchase... with another purchase!!!

I might have to give in this time, remote play from ps4 to vita would be pretty amazing.  PS4 better be a huge success!

I wasn't going to buy a Vita, but hearing this put me over the edge. I'll wait til after I get the PS4, but this is great to hear and it will be very easier to port over contrary to some comments I've seen already. Not to mention it could help the game experience as Nintendo was pushing with the Wii U. This is the same idea with FAR FAR FAR better technology which will make it work much better, especially the streaming aspect.

Here I was thinking that PS will recieve multiplatform games the same time as Xbox and PC... Silly me. On PS3 dev had to deal with crappy XMB, now on PS4 they need to waste time and effort to save Sony's sinking hanheld buisness... II though Sony learned from their mistakes already :-\

I'm wondering here.... does this mean that all games for the PS4 also have a Vita counterpart?  And if so, does that mean a whole lot more work for game developers?  If so, this is the first thing since Microsoft shot it's own foot off that Sony has done to hurt themselves.

I'm honestly wondering about this.... I'll admit I don't know what this really "means", if someone could enlighten me.

so..

you are forcing developers to give players options they want instead of forcing players to give up their options for money?

what are you doing sony? you're so backwards...

unless they plan on making the price for Vita memory cards more reasonable then i don't care about remote play.

@sdkingsht remote play is a streaming service.  Unless it is creating temporary files on your vita for some reason this should have no impact on storage space.

Protip for mem card whiners: go buy physical copies of your games.

@sdkingsht lol...still complaining about memory card prices...Why cant people just save their money..Is it really that hard...I saved my money and bought a 3g at launch and have loved it ever sense...Granted I fon that I dont really need the 3g version as I can just use my phone to teether or whatever but I love my vita...Also, the few games that work with remote-play are awesome and sens the ps4 will use a slightly different tech that makes it look even better, this will be awesome..Stop thinking that you will be wasting your money on this thing, its completely worth it. You can find deals on memory cards at various places from time to time if you look right...This system is going to be essential to the Ps4 & I am not about to miss out on all the greatness...

The reason I don't own a Vita is the ridiculously overpriced memory cards... Once they reach micro sdhc price level then I'll buy one...

When you need your new home console to save the vita you know something went wrong. Sony should just pull out of the portable business.

dorkgeniuz21
dorkgeniuz21

@Prime_28 LOL...you dont have a ps vita I presume. Well I do and I love it to death and have ever sense launch.Regardless of what you may think or how its selling, its a beast of a machine that everyone everywhere should own, or at least hardcore gamers who want something more than the 3ds that is. I own all systems and i have never been as impressed with any handheld as much until the vita came out. It also has plenty of games, people just keep saying it lacks games because very title isn't a AAA COD,BIOSHOCK game, but that all will change withen the next two years I promise you. I remember when I bought the 3ds at launch and loved it & people were thinking nintendo  would stop selling it because it got low sales. Soon after the price drop & Mario 3ds came out, 3ds's sky rocketed .The difference between the 3ds & Vita though is that I actually feel like the Vita is worth the price its at while the 3ds at the same price was a bit over priced. Aside from the 3g model, the vita has tons of features and feels like a high-end machine so i never got mad at the price...

Go back to your Nintendo comment section troll. This was a feature they intended for the ps3 and are making good for on the ps4. Your probably just jealous it can do every thing the wii u can a hell of a lot better, and features games that rate higher than E.

Even though I am getting a PS4 and not a Vita, this is pretty nice. Although I swear I heard about this happening with the PS3 a while back. I think it was when they first announced the Vita.

Yeah they had it for a few games, but since they made it optional most devs didn't bother. That's why they would be making it manditory for ps4 games.

@killer90210 @sgt_F79 If microsoft had a handheld I could 100% guarantee they would require you to have it to be able to play the xbone. stfd!

@Anxiety21 @killer90210 @sgt_F79 not only that but they would require you to pay for a service just to do anything other than playing games, You can do everything on vita for free, browse the web, watch netflix(with netflix account ofcoarse),watch youtube etc....

I do think that some people are just bad at reading...

First of all, this feature doesn't require an internet connecting, as it operates through your LAN network, you only need a router that's not godawful.

Second,

The stream feature isn't unique for each game, it works the same way, no matter what game you develop. There, the devs don't need to customize every single game for the feature. Rather, they only need to learn the process of integrating it once, and they'll know how to do it in the future. I'm pretty sure learning a game engine is a far more arduous task than that and devs go through the process quite often.

My gaming future predicted:

Gaming Console: PS4

Opertaing OS on my PC: Either sticking with Win7 or Stepping over Win8 to Win9

My handheld: Nintendo 3DS and My Xperia

The rest of you: PS vita, XBOX one, Wii U, ect can be described in one word: Meh......

I don't get your comment unless you are trolling.  You are saying someone who would NOT get a PS4  would get a Vita?  then after that get every next gen console BUT the PS4?  yaa  try again lmao

BTW  Win8 is trash IMO   you are better off sticking with WIn 7

@alastor529 @KingofCabal Meh! TROLLING! (super bored) Lets just wait for E3 and the Win8 update. Then you can predict all what you want. Sounds better.

awesome, this is what we call a win-win, Sony get a boost in Vita sales and gamers more options, I guess if I get a ps4 I will also be getting a Vita am tired of having to stop playing because someone want to watch TV, like seriously what the eff is there to watch on TV

pmamba45

@steelmouth

It's also a great option against cheaply made motherboards that keel over sooner than expected. "Reduced Vita With PS4" -

I know...slim chance.

@steelmouth Why dont you just get your own tv or Hdmi LED monitor

UncleAnesthesia

@KingofCabal @steelmouth Yeah, you can get a decent TV for less than what a vita costs.

@UncleAnesthesia @KingofCabal @steelmouth You need to own a ps vita to understand the appeal. Why knock somebody for wanting one just because you dont want one yourself.Everyones situation is different. I for instance live in a house with 5 people, all of which watch their own shows throughout the day forcing me to have to wait til lik 10pm to play my games..If someone were to have a baby who sleeps a lot the feature would work wonders...No real gamer wants to stop gaming. Its the same reason the wii-u kind of had an appeal to it but so far failed due to lack of games I guess...

Eh Sony lost me on the PSVita that thing was a fail IMO, very little games and they gave a good impression that it could remote play PS3 games when it launched...3DS eats the PSVita alive when it comes to support and software. Nuff said.

dorkgeniuz21
dorkgeniuz21 like.author.displayName 1 Like

@Danny_KickAzz Everyone who says that, doesnt own a ps vita, everyone that does has nothing but good things to say about it. I have both a 3ds & a vita and love them both but more games have ironically been coming out for the vita and plenty more will keep coming. The 2 analog stick feel way better to use than the one on the 3ds & I cant stand using the big *** monster attachment...I think whats happened is that 1.People are still waiting for a price drop thanks to Nintendo caving and dropping the price of the 3ds...2.Something about it or the games for it hasnt appealed to the majority of gamers yet and they are waiting for a specific franchise to come to the handheld, & 3. People are to ignorent & Cheap to actually listen to the positive vita news & comments. Every single bad comment everywhere is always from someone who doesnt own a vita and just hears news of low sales hear and there but if you remember, it was the same way with the 3ds in the beginning. The vita just needs more time to find a bigger audience.Once people have their Ps4's in hand and play a few games you can almost bet the thought of playing such awesome games on the go will corss their minds..

XNEXUS666X
XNEXUS666X

@Danny_KickAzz Agreed (on the Vita sucking). This was a big disappointment for me, it's not the promised piece of hardware we were all led to believe. I never play the damn thing, the analog sticks are badly positioned and why the hell would you play games remotely on it only on your local network? If you could download and continue say Watch_Dogs on the go, then it would be awesome, but LAN remote play isn't even a feature that's noteworthy, let alone newsworthy. But good luck with the PS4 people, hopefully it's more of a success than the Vita.

dorkgeniuz21
dorkgeniuz21 like.author.displayName 1 Like

@XNEXUS666X @Danny_KickAzz Have you ever used remote-play with ICO/SOTC collection etc....It works perfectly on Lan, with the ps4 it will work even better and with practically every ps4 game. Just wait when your in a situation when you are in your room or living room playing your ps4 and someone demands the tv and wants to watch housewives of Africa and your forced to sit there and watch or continue on your vita. If im not mistaken they will also use the gaikai service so you may also be able to use wifi somewhere else like at your friends house who doesn't have a ps4 yet...SHoot if you dont want your vita I will gladly take it off your hands because you have no idea what kind of gem you have sir

It has plenty of great games, more than I can keep up with. It's not the 3ds and in my opinion that's a good thing, no offence to anyone that likes Nintendo games, but I have no desire to play kid games. I'm a grown man and want to play mature games on the go, the vita does that fort me. I'd take one uncharted over 30 Mario's any day.
