Ali Carter has been diagnosed with testicular cancer and will have surgery on Tuesday this week.

The three-time ranking event winner was given the news by doctors last week. After surgery he will have chemotherapy.

Chelmsford's 33-year-old Carter said: "I hope to be back in action soon."

World Snooker Chairman Barry Hearn said: "Ali has shown in his battle against Crohn's disease that he is a fighter. We hope for a positive outcome and everyone in snooker is 100 per cent behind him. We look forward to seeing him back on the circuit soon."

WPBSA Chairman Jason Ferguson added: "Having had surgery for skin cancer a few years ago, I understand what Ali is going through now. He has had many battles on and off the table and I am sure he is strong enough to win this one."
