This page contains short biographies of each of Transport for London's (TfL's) Board Members.

To observe the highest standards of impartiality, integrity and objectivity, each Board Member declares their interests - including positions, directorships and shareholdings - relevant to TfL.

Below each Board Member's biography you will find their 'Declaration of interests'. 

From January 2013, if any offers of gifts or hospitality have been accepted by a Board Member you will find a register of these acceptances below their biography. 

Boris Johnson, Chairman

Boris Johnson, Chairman

Boris Johnson was elected Mayor of London in May 2008. Previously he was the Member of Parliament for Henley and the Editor of the Spectator magazine. He is a journalist on several national newspapers and the author of many books. He was born in New York in 1964 and brought up in London. As a teenager he won scholarships to Eton College and Oxford University, where he read Classics. He lives in North London with his wife Marina and their four children.

Isabel Dedring, Deputy Chair

Isabel Dedring, Deputy Chair

Isabel Dedring is Deputy Mayor for Transport. Before her appointment, she was the Mayor's Environment Advisor. A qualified lawyer, she has worked across both public and private sectors including at Transport for London as Director of the Commissioner's Policy Unit and at McKinsey and Company, where she spent four years working with clients in regulated industries including telecoms and transport. She is a Board member of the Institute for Sustainability.

Peter Anderson

Peter AndersonPeter Anderson is Managing Director of Finance at Canary Wharf Group plc. He brings extensive experience of managing and developing a major business within a rapidly regenerating area to his TfL role together with experience of influencing the development of transport infrastructure appropriate to an area of rapid commercial and residential development. He was a special adviser to the TfL Board from 2007, until his appointment to the Board in June 2008.

Sir John Armitt CBE

Sir John Armitt CBE

Sir John Armitt CBE FREng FICE, was appointed Chairman of the Olympic Delivery Authority on 1 September 2007. Sir John was previously Chief Executive of Network Rail from October 2002 and Chief Executive of Railtrack plc from December 2001. Sir John is also Chairman of the National Express Group, a Non-Executive Director of the Berkeley Group and Chairman of the City and Guilds Institute of London. He was awarded the CBE in 1996 for his contribution to the rail industry. He was formerly Chairman of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, and is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Institution of Civil Engineers. Sir John received a Knighthood in the New Year Honours List 2012 for his services to engineering and construction.

Sir Brendan Barber

Sir Brendan Barber

Sir Brendan Barber was General Secretary of the TUC from 2003 to 2012. He previously undertook a range of other roles in the TUC having first joined in 1975. He has served on a number of public bodies including as a Commissioner in the UK Commission on Employment and Skills, as a Council member for the Advisory Conciliation and Arbitration Service and as a member of the Court of the Bank of England.  Sir Brendan received a Knighthood in the Queen's Birthday Honours List 2013 for his services to employment relations.

Richard Barnes

Richard Barnes

Richard Barnes has been involved in local politics in West London for some thirty years.  Formerly Leader of the London Borough of Hillingdon, Richard was a member of the Greater London Assembly from its inception in 2000 until May 2012. From 2008 until 2012 he was the Statutory Deputy Mayor of London with responsibilities that included Community Cohesion, Community Relations, London Resilience, and he was the Chairman of the London 2012 Access and Diversity Forum for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Chairman of the 7 July Review Committee, Richard retains a deep interest in business continuity and resilience, ensuring that London, its communities and businesses are prepared for catastrophic events that can affect the City, its visitors and residents. A former Deputy Chairman of the Metropolitan Police Committee, Richard is an elected Member of the Council of the London Borough of Hillingdon.

Charles Belcher

Charles Belcher

Charles Belcher has had 36 years in the rail industry, of which 14 were as Managing Director, including for West Coast Trains, Wessex Trains and Silverlink. He was Chairman of National Rail Enquiries Ltd between 2000 and 2007. He will represent the interests of people living, working and studying outside Greater London served by TfL's rail services.

Roger Burnley

Roger Burnley

Roger Burnley is Managing Director of General Merchandise, Clothing and Logistics at J Sainsburys PLC.  He joined the operating board in March 2006 as Supply Chain Director before assuming the role of Retail and Logistics Director (2008-2012).  He was previously Supply Chain Director at Matalan.  Roger spend his early career in retail management and buying at B&Q before joining ASDA/Walmart, where he held a number of positions before becoming the Supply Chain Director in 2001.  He is currently Vice President of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (UK).

Brian Cooke

Brian Cooke

Brian Cooke was Chairman of London TravelWatch from 2004 to 2008 and has been a board member of both Passenger Focus and the Rail Users Consultative Council.  He has been a champion of transport users' interests for over 20 years.  Following senior appointments with major Tour Operators, he spent many years running a small group of travel agencies in the London area.  He is a former director of both the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) and the Institute of Travel and Tourism (ITT).  He is an active supporter of the Conservative party and has been Chairman of Orpington Conservative Association where he lives.

Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson DBE

Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson DBEBaroness Tanni Grey-Thompson of Eaglescliffe has competed in five Paralympic Games, winning 11 gold, four silver and one bronze medal. She has held 30 world records. She is Director of the London Marathon and Pro Vice-Chancellor of Staffordshire University as well as holding other prominent positions in sports bodies. In December 2012 she joined the Board of the London Legacy Development Corporation. She has been a member of the National Disability Council and Senior Deputy Chair of the UK Lottery Award Panel. She was made a Dame of the British Empire in 2005 and was appointed to the House of Lords as a cross-bench peer in March 2010.

Angela Knight

Angela Knight

Before joining Energy UK, Angela was Chief Executive at the BBA for five years. Previously she was Chief Executive of the Association of Private Client Investment Managers and Stockbrokers for nine years. She was honoured with a CBE for services to the financial services industry in 2007.  She was Economic Secretary to the Treasury from 1995- 1997, after being Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Rt Hon Kenneth Clarke MP, Chancellor of the Exchequer, and before that to Industry Minister Sir Tim Sainsbury MP.  She was MP for Erewash from 1992 - 1997. She graduated from Bristol University with a degree in chemistry and worked at Air Products before jointly setting up and running the company Cook & Knight Ltd for six years.  She is also a non-executive director on the boards of Brewin Dolphin PLC, Tullett Prebon PLC and the PwC Advisory Board.

Michael Liebreich

Michael Liebreich

Michael Liebreich is CEO of Bloomberg New Energy Finance, a research company which he founded in 2004 and sold to Bloomberg LP in 2009. He serves on various international bodies such as the Global Agenda Councils of the World Economic Forum and the UN Secretary-General's High-Level Group on Sustainable Energy for All. He has an MA in engineering from Cambridge, an MBA from Harvard Business School, where he was a Harkness Fellow, and is a Visiting Professor at Imperial College. He is Chairman of St Mark's Hospital Foundation and in 1992 was a member of the British Olympic Ski Team.

Eva Lindholm

Eva LindholmEva Lindholm has over 25 years of experience in the financial services industry through various roles at JPMorgan, including Vice Chairman of JPMorgan Global Corporate bank, as well as extensive experience in the coverage of Public Sector institutions in Europe and the emerging markets. Eva currently holds a senior role at UBS Wealth Management Europe.  Eva is active in recruiting and retaining female talent in the financial services industry, as well as various diversity related initiatives. She has been on the TfL Board since 2006, and is a native of Finland.

Daniel Moylan

Daniel Moylan

Daniel Moylan joined the TfL Board in August 2008 and served as Deputy Chairman of TfL from 2009 to 2012. He has been a Conservative councillor in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea since 1990 and was Deputy Leader of the Council from 2000 to 2011. He is Chairman of Kensington and Chelsea Environmental Limited and co-chairs Urban Design London. He was appointed by TfL as a non-executive director of Crossrail Limited in July 2013. He is a non-executive director of a property investment trust.

Bob Oddy

Bob Oddy

Bob Oddy has been a licensed taxi driver since 1966.  He is currently Deputy General Secretary of the Licensed Taxi Drivers' Association - which has a membership of over 9,000. He has been actively involved in many issues affecting the taxi industry. He is Director of LTDA Enterprises Ltd and an Adviser to Computer Cab Company Ltd.

Keith Williams

Keith Williams

Keith Williams is Chief Executive Officer for British Airways and has been a main Board director for the last six years.  He is also a Board member of International Airlines Group.  Prior to joining British Airways he worked for a range of major corporations including Reckitt and Coleman, Apple Computer Inc and Boots.  He has extensive financial experience including a detailed knowledge of business planning, capital projects, project finance, and has been involved in many recent issues such as pensions and industrial relations.  He is a qualified Chartered Accountant.

Steve Wright

Steve Wright

Steve Wright, after an early career with London Underground, became involved in the private hire trade and successfully ran a private hire company for over 25 years. Steve is currently Chair of the Licensed Private Hire Car Association. This organisation comprises of 150 companies representing 15,000 drivers, with a further 1,000 companies registered. In 1999 Steve was awarded an MBE for services to transport in London.
