Welcome Chief Sheriff DeCesare

The Rhode Island Division of Sheriffs is pleased to announce that on Friday, March 8, 2013, David M. DeCesare was sworn in by Colonel Steven G. O'Donnell, Superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police and Director of the Department of Public Safety, as the new Chief Sheriff for the Rhode Island Division of Sheriffs.

David M. DeCesare is a 24-year veteran of the Johnston Police Department, where he has served as Deputy Chief since June of 2009. He has received numerous commendations and letters of recognition to include the Johnston Police Medal of Valor and the Rhode Island American Legion Medal of Valor. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Administration of Justice from Roger Williams University and is a graduate of the prestigious FBI National Academy.

As Chief Sheriff, he will be responsible for the daily operation, policy implementation and direction of the Sheriffs to include the custody, safety, discipline and well being of prisoners and defendants while being transported to and from the courts and other facilities, and to affect a comprehensive program of judicial security in the courts and other buildings. The Division of Sheriffs has approximately 175 employees.

2013 Rhode Island Sheriff's Training Academy

The submission period for applications for the 2013 Rhode Island Sheriff's Training Academy has ended. Applications will no longer be accepted.

Qualified applicants will receive a letter advising of the next phase in the recruiting process.
