Heonilleung Royal Tomb

Heonilleung Royal Tombs has 2 burial areas called Heolleung and Illeung. Heonilleung Royal Tomb is located south of Gangnam. In June, 2009 the Royal Tombs around Korea were added to the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Heolleung Royal Tomb: Heolleung tomb holds the bodies of King Taejong, the 3rd king of the Joseon Dynasty and his wife, Queen Wongyeong. Heolleung is a twin tomb mound with the King on the left and the Queen on the right following the traditional tomb layout. King Taejong (18 May 1367 – 10 May 1422) is the father of King Sejong the Great.

Illeung Royal Tomb: Illeung tomb holds the bodies of King Sunjo (1790-1834), the 23rd King of the Joseon Dynasty and his wife Queen Sunwon. The tomb is a joint mound that holds the two bodies. At first the tomb was buried next to Paju Jangneung but later moved to it’s current location as the Feng Shui at the old site was deemed to be unfavourable.
