THE race is on to get the first vodka brewed using Jersey Royal potatoes on to the shelves after two local companies announced they were distilling the spirit within days of each other.

The Jersey Royal Distillery Company and La Mare Wine Estate have both been working behind the scenes for years on plans for the Island’s first commercial vodka made using Jersey Royal potatoes.

However, they both chose exactly the same week to reveal their plans to the public.

Seem to remember a number of years ago the same idea was put forward by Monford Tadier and family as a use of the potatoes that was subsequently dumped at crabbe.

Interesting how these two companies all of sudden can look at it with an obvious green light from someone that they will be allowed to produce.

Montford Tadier will not be in teh states much longer so I wouldn’t worry – only a mad man would vote for him now. He’ll have to get a normal job and has no chance of getting £40K, no chance of working int eh finace sector either as he knows NOTHING about it.

A sad truth. I remember buying Jersey Royals in Ireland and being please to pay the premium, but years latter being saddened to buy the Breton equivalent in Jersey, because they were better and cheaper than the Royals

it’s the sun that creates the sugars in fruit/veg. tomatoes are very watery this spring. it’s no good blaming the growers.

Hard to believe it was a coincidence that they both announced it this week.

They didn’t, The Jersey Royal Distillery Company announced their launch the week before, I heard it on BBC radio and 103.7. La Mare then decided that they should announce theirs pretty quickly so to not miss the hype. Sadly JEP reported it 8 days later than the rest of the press… Great stuff though, an artisan spirit and a commercially manufactured version both out at the same time, can’t wait to do a comparison.

Are they really going to be allowed to produce alchohol? Not if the health department have their way I am surprised there has been no comment from said department. Hic.

The name should give you an hint:
The Jersey Royal Distillery Company and La Mare Wine Estate

I guess they already have the license to produce spirits.

It is nothing to do with the Health Department. Customs and Excise are in charge of licenses to produce alcohol.

    Overpopulated

Someone wanted to build a huge vodka factory in St John some years ago that was turned down.

Vodka apparently needs a large amount of grain as well as potatoes so this would have to be imported.

I believe that vodka is very cheap to produce it is the tax that makes it expensive and anything made in Jersey is far more expensive than things made elsewhere
