Kalon Tripa to be now referred to as Sikyong

(TibetanReview.net, Sep22, 2012)  The term “Kalon Tripa”, used to refer to the head of the exile Tibetan cabinet for decades and later to the directly elected head of government since 2001 and from August last year to the directly elected political leader of the Tibetan people has now been amended out of official usage. The political leader of the Tibetan people will henceforth be referred to as the “Sikyong”.

The 15th Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile on Sep 20 amended Article 19 of the Charter of Tibetans in Exile to introduce the new nomenclature in place of the old. The amendment was passed unanimously, with many members emphasizing that the term has been specifically used by the Dalai Lama repeatedly, especially when handing over his political power as head-of-government to the Kalon Tripa on Aug 8 last year.

The Term “Sikyong” is understood to mean “political leader” in apparent contradistinction to “spiritual leader” which the Dalai Lama continues to be.
