Cultivation

The different forms of cabbage, such as cauliflower, broccoli, white cabbage, green cabbage, red cabbage, savoy cabbage, pointed cabbage, sprouts and kohlrabi (cabbage turnip) all originate from wild cabbage (Brassica oleracea). Other important producing countries are India. Russia, the Korean Republic, Japan, the USA, Ukraine and Poland.

Utilisation

Cabbage is consumed as:

  • a vegetable, vegetable products, salad

Gene technology: aims of research and development

In the databanks for field trials of genetically modified plants the various forms of cabbage are mostly not differentiated.

Agronomic traits

Weed control

Resistance to pests

Plant development

  • Male sterility to help in the breeding of hybrids (high-yield breeds); often in combination with herbicide tolerance
