About the Division of Sheriffs

History

The Rhode Island Division of Sheriffs was originally established in 1663 by the General Assembly of "His Majesty’s Colony of Rhode-Island and Providence-Plantations". At that time there was one Sheriff whose responsibility was to have the care and custody of "His Majesty's" jail in Newport. Since that time many centuries ago, the size and responsibilities of the Division of Sheriffs have grown. It was consolidated within the Rhode Island Department of Public Safety in July 2011. The Division is responsible for courtroom security and cellblocks in all state courthouses, training of personnel, extradition and civil service, and transportation of individuals charged with crimes.
