Transport for London

Northern line extension

We are proposing to extend the Northern line to Nine Elms and Battersea.

This Northern line extension (NLE) forms part of wider plans to regenerate the Vauxhall, Nine Elms and Battersea area.

Transport and Works Act Order (TWAO)

The Secretary of State for Transport has announced that a public inquiry will be held to consider our application starting on Tuesday 19 November 2013. This is expected to last around 4 weeks.

An independent inspector has been appointed to run the public inquiry.

On 18 October 2013 we submitted our proofs of evidence to support our Transport and Works Act Order (TWAO) to apply for deemed planning permission to construct the NLE.

These and other documents relating to th NLE inquiry process are available to view on the NLE Public Inquiry website.

The procedure for TWAO public inquiries is very similar to that for major planning inquiries and is set out in Factsheet L: TWAO Process.

On 27 August 2013 we submitted an Environmental Statement Addendum to the Secretary of State for Transport which included some changes to the scheme.

Our commitments on specific issues

We have met with resident and community groups, landowners and others with an interest in our proposals as the plans have developed. In response to their feedback we have identified a series of commitments on a number of issues and areas. These summarise what we have said on those issues in our 'Statement of Case' and in our written evidence prepared for the inquiry. The documents below set these out:

Timeline

Benefits of the NLE

The extension will improve transport links and public spaces in the area and is essential to support the transformation of Vauxhall, Nine Elms and Battersea, a designated regeneration area on the South Bank.

Up to 25,000 jobs and 16,000 new homes could be created. Journey times from Nine Elms or Battersea to the West End or the City will, in some cases, be less than 15 minutes.

An independent report on the economic impact of the Northern line extension has shown it could generate substantial benefits to the area.

The extension is supported by the Mayor of London, Wandsworth, Lambeth and Southwark councils.
