The Melghat Forests Is the Dhakna –Kolkaz Wildlife Sanctuary

Article Summary   by:madugundukrishna     Original Author: madugunduk

The Tadoba National park, named after a Gond, has a lake in the center and is the home of a variety of games ranging from the rare tiger and panther to the plentiful chital. The lake is visited by colorful bird life, including the migratory duck.

One of the most picturesque of forests is the Nawegaon National Park with a lake sparkling at its feet. Forest and glade, the Sat Bahini (seven sisters) mountain peaks and the silvery waters this a spot a rare scenic splendor. Some of the other sanctuaries are the Radhanagari bison sanctuary (near Ratnagiri), the Nagzira Sanctuary (near Gondia) and the beautiful kinwat Sanctuary. Nearer Mumbai, at Karnala, is a bird sanctuary.

In the heart of the Melghat forests is the Dhakna –Kolkaz wildlife sanctuary, also very little known. It is the home of the tiger in Maharasthra and also has a rich range of bird life. No better spot can be chosen for quiet and serenity than the emerald valleys formed by the rivers Sipna and Dolar.

This, then, is little –known Maharasthra, a land of great beauty and strong contrasts, where rugged rocks stand guard behind sunny laughing beaches, where grim forts and cave temples alternate with swaying palms and fields of sugarcane, where thick forests and green hills provide wooded paths for groups of devotees to wend their way, singing with love and pride in the traditions of their martial history.
