Universities in Morocco

Higher education in Morocco is, primarily, the responsibility of the Ministry of Education. However, some other ministries such as Ministry of Agriculture or Ministry of Health are also empowered to set up their own specialised universities in Morocco. Higher education in Morocco is relatively open to competition, with a significant number of institutions being privately run.

The current system of higher education in Morocco was introduced in 2003 and is delivered at institutions, broadly categorized as a university or non-university. Based on its type and delivery channel, higher education in Morocco can be categorized as:
  • Academic education, which is delivered at universities
  • Applied or technical education, which is imparted at institutions, commonly called écoles in Morocco. These programs are also called managerial staff programs
Besides these two types of higher education in Morocco, some engineering programs are also offered by special institutions (known more commonly as Grandes Ecoles) of professional higher education in Morocco. All higher education institutions and colleges in Morocco teach in Arabic; Al Akhaouayn University in Ifrane being the only institution in Morocco with English as language of instruction.

Higher education in Morocco is divided into three stages; the first leading to a Bachelor’s degree, the second leading to Master’s degree and the final, if completed, leads to a Doctoral degree. All universities and colleges in Morocco offer courses leading to a Bachelor’s degree while some offer Master’s and Doctoral degrees as well.

Bachelor’s degree in Morocco

A Bachelor’s degree course in Morocco lasts three years that are further divided into two cycles. The first cycle comprises the first, or propedeutic, year. Students, after successfully completing their first year, can pursue either theoretical specialization (études fondamentales) orprofessional specialization (etudes professionnelles). The second cycle is two years long, after completing which, students are conferred upon the Licence d’Etudes Fondamentales or the Licence Professionnelle.

Admission to a Bachelor’s degree course in Morocco requires the candidate to have successfully cleared the Attestation du Baccalauréat. Admissions to specialized courses and programs may have additional criteria such as taking separate entrance examinations and having completed prerequisite subjects.

Master’s degree in Morocco

Graduates with a Bachelor’s degree or Licence can apply for a Master’s degree course in Morocco. Admission to these two year programs may also require meeting additional criteria, as decided by the institution. Students of Master’s degree courses in Morocco can choose one of two specializations leading to either a Master or Master Spécialisé degree.

Interested students, who successfully complete the Master’s degree course in Morocco, can further apply for a doctoral degree, which usually requires three years of research. Successful public defense of the research thesis entitles students to conferment of a doctoral degree.

The higher education system in Morocco also allows students to request for interim degrees. Diplôme d’Etudes Universitaire Générales (DEUG) or the Diplôme d’Etudes Universitaire Professionelles (DEUP) can be requested for after completion of two years in the first stage. Maîtrise diploma, considered equivalent of final qualification, can be requested for, after completing one year in the second stage.
