The Second Round Contest Held Successfully in Russia and Brazil

"K-POP Made All of Us Friends"
Over 5,000 K-POP Fans Participating in the Second Round Contest

The Visit Korea Committee successfully held the second round contest in Russia and Brazil on September 6th and 7th for the 2011 K-POP Cover Dance Festival. On September 6th, 18 teams participated in the second round moderated by the popular comedian, Jeong Hyeong-don in downtown Moscow. The round witnessed the wild popularity of K-POP in Russia where classical music is deeply rooted. Each team consisted of 1 to 12 persons and showcased passionate cover dances resembling performances of SHINee, Beast, TVXQ, Girls` Generation, Super Junior, Rania, f(x), and Sistar. Teams not only followed dances of the Korean idol groups, but their fashion and hairstyles, performing as if they were K-POP idols. SHINee judged the contest and acknowledged that "despite difficult choreography, teams performed admirably and passionately,” and that "their interpretations of K-POP idols` performances were simply amazing."

Most fans were in their teens or early twenties and responded engagingly to performances of the contestants. Initially, one thousand seats were reserved for the contest, but there were over 1,500 audience members packing the venue and dancing together with the contestants. Febris Erotica, a six-person male group consisting of guys in their late teens and early twenties, showcased the choreography of Beast and SHINee and showed affection for K-POP, saying that "K-POP brought us together and made us friends."

The wild popularity was also palpable in Sao Paulo, Brazil on September 7th. Held at Club Homs in downtown Sao Paulo, 20 teams showcased cover dance performances resembling performances of Rain, SHINee, TVXQ, 2NE1, Girls` Generation, and Super Junior. The second round there was schedule to start at 2 p.m., but overflowing fans caused a delay of the contest by two hours. The street in front of the club began to be filled with fans around 6 a.m. Over 5,000 K-POP fans were believed to be outside the club, although only 1,000 fans could enter the club due to limited seating. Those who couldn`t enter the club showed their support for K-POP by holding placards and photos of K-POP idols. MBLAQ judged the Sao Paulo round. The event coordinators marveled at the fan response despite the fact that they "didn`t distribute a single poster, even in Korean Town" and expected that "K-POP could be successful in South American including Brazil."

The 2011 K-POP Cover Dance Festival was prepared as a participatory event to bring together K-POP fans from around the world and to attract them to superb Hallyu (Korean Wave) contents. The first round of the festival was held between June and August, and winners were chosen based on online performance videos by participants from Korea, Japan, China, European countries, and countries in North and South America. A series of regional second rounds already began in Russia and Brazil, to be followed by Los Angeles, California, the United States (September 11th); Tokyo, Japan (September 11th); Bangkok, Thailand (September 18th); Madrid, Spain (September 19th); and Seoul, South Korea (September 23rd). Winners of the second round from around the world will be invited to Korea to participate in the 2011 K-POP Cover Dance Festival which is the third and final round that will be held in Gyeongju, Gyeongsangbukdo during the Hallyu Dream Festival.
