After the hustle-bustle red of the red carpet event, the main event of 2013 Paeksang Arts Awards, into its 49th edition, opened its curtains at the Peace Palace hall of Kyung-hee University in Seoul on Thursday night.

Hosted by three celebrity emcees – actor Joo Won, anchorman-turned-show host Oh Sang-jin and fourth year in a row lady host Kim A-joong – the two-hour awards ceremony was filled with surprise, disappointment, joy and tears.

Child actor Ji Dae-han, the winner of best new film actor with his mixed-blood musical kid role in “My Little Hero,” seemed purely shocked with his win, spending 40 seconds rolling his eyes before he spit out, “Thanks to everyone,” to the loud cheering from the audience.

Though most of the winners were predictable due to their selective appearances at the venue, all the nominees for best male TV personality turned up for the ceremony including Yoo Jae-suk, Cultwo, Huh Gyeong-hwan, Kim Jun-ho and Kim Byung-man, who was named the winner.

“To tell you the truth, I feel like I get three years older every time I go to the jungle for ‘The Laws of the Jungle.’ But this prize makes me feel young again,” Kim jokingly said with reference to his central role in the SBS show.

Meanwhile, TV producer Kang Goong of MBC’s entertainment show “Dad! Where Are We Going?,” the overnight vacation show starring five celebrity fathers and their children, made a remarkable comment after winning the trophy for best TV variety show.

“Life is hard but parents need to hang out with their children on the weekend while worrying about what more they can do for their kids. We made this program for our fathers and mothers, for my mother and father, and for you. I’d like to share this honor with you, too.”

Shinhwa’s Kim Dong-wan, who recently wrapped up the six-month run of his popular TV series “Cheer Up, Mr. Kim!,” shared his thoughts on the joy of winning a popularity award.

“A prize means so much to a singer-turned-actor, since it means that we have won one more favorable point from the public along with being a singer. This prize was made possible by SHINHWA’s fans, and I appreciate that,” he said to his fans.

Actress Kim Min-hee revealed a story behind her romance film “Very Ordinary Couple,” which brought her a surprise win in the best actress category.

“When I felt worn out and agonized during the filming, director No Deok said I’m doing a good job and promised me to make the movie great. After watching the film, I was so glad. I appreciate director No for making such a nice film and I’ll treasure it in my heart,” she said.

Ryu Seung-ryong

Ryu Seung-ryong, the 42-year-old actor who has been in his prime since 2011 with a series of hit films including “War of the Arrows,” “All About My Wife,” “Masquerade” and “Miracle in Cell No. 7,” made a firm resolution after winning the grand prize in the film category.

“I was acting five years ago, and I was acting ten years ago…… I’ll be an actor who always dreams to take on new challenges. And I’ll be the actor who gives variety but not change.”

Yoo Jae-suk

Last but not least, comedian and emcee Yoo Jae-suk closed the ceremony with his sincere message of thanks toward his support staff, which he referred to as the solid foundation for the Korean entertainment industry currently on a roll.

“The support staff of variety shows undergoes all sorts of hardships behind the camera. When we go to high places, they shoot us from even higher up, and when we go down low, they shoot us from even lower places. I sincerely am grateful to them and their hard work.”

“We, the TV personalities and our staff have one single goal and one single problem. It’s how to entertain you. It’s all we think about and prepare for only that the whole time. To people who love variety shows, don’t be worried and don’t get disturbed. We’re going to make you laugh out loud. Thank you,” Yoo said and ended the night’s fancy and dazzling festivities with a humble bow.
