Snooker: Paul Davison loses to Rod Lawler in German Masters
11:16am Saturday 1st February 2014 in Sport
PAUL DAVISON suffered German Masters agony after losing 5-4 to Rod Lawler, writes Steve Carroll.
The Pickering-based potter was looking to reach the last 16 of a snooker ranking tournament for the first time in his career and led 4-1 at the Tempodrom in Berlin.
Davison, who shocked world number nine Marco Fu 5-2 in the first round, shared the first two frames with Lawler but then put the hammer down – breaks of 36 and 43 winning the third and a break of 50 putting him 3-1 ahead at the mid-session interval.
He cleared the colours in the fifth to steal the frame and move just one away from victory but his opponent dug deep – a break of 47 in the eighth frame helping him reduce the deficit to just one.
The match was then halted to allow the start of the evening session and, when the players returned, Lawler won frame eight with a run of 58 before clinching the decider.
