Snooker: Paul Davison revels in German Masters conquest of Marco Fu

PAUL DAVISON bagged the biggest win of his 20-year snooker career after dumping world number nine Marco Fu out of the German Masters.

The Pickering-based potter produced a superb display to shock the Hong Kong ace 5-2 and secure a second round clash today against Liverpool’s Rod Lawler at the Tempodrom in Berlin.

Fu has reached the final of two ranking events this season but Davison, who led 3-1 at the mid-session interval, dispatched him with breaks of 69 and 96 to progress.

Davison, at 74 in the standings, has now equalled his best ever performance in a ranking event by reaching the last 32 stage – a feat he managed in Berlin two years ago and at the Australian Goldfields Open at the start of this season.

But despite revelling in a fantastic result, he has already set his sights on going much further in the tournament.

“It was a great atmosphere and the conditions were fantastic,” he said of his Fu victory.

“There was a good crowd in and people over in Germany seem to like me so I got quite a lot of support.

“I got off to a good start and I could have gone in 4-0 at the interval but 3-1 was a fair result. He played well to pull a frame back but I finished with 69 and 96. It wasn’t an easy chance in the final frame.

“The black was safe and I just had to pick some of the reds off. I had a chance to go into the pack and got a nice split. I kept hold of the white ball and it was really nice to finish it off in one visit.

“I’m over the moon with that and I am ready for my next game.”

Asked if it was his best ever win, Davison, who turned professional in 1992, added: “To beat someone of that stature in those conditions was fantastic. He was the favourite. I had nothing to lose and it has to be up there as one of the best wins of my career – if not the best.”

Lawler is currently at number 50 in the world rankings and Davison said his opponent this afternoon was a “very hard match player”.

He continued: “He is not bothered who he plays and that’s the right attitude to have. It’s going to be a tough game but, if I play like I did against Marco, I have got a good chance.

“It was a really fantastic result with the season he has been having and I will take a lot from that. Touch wood, it will carry on into the next round.”
