Jimmy Cliff planning sequel to The Harder They Come
Tuesday, November 24, 2009
When legendary Jamaican singer and actor Jimmy Cliff went to Nigeria recently to receive an award as a Peace Ambassador from the Economic Commission of West Africa (ECOWAS), alongside his Ivoirian counterpart, Alpha Blondy, he was able to renew his links with Jamaican-born novelist and broadcaster Lindsay Barrett.
Barrett had been partly instrumental in Cliff making his first trip to the African continent three decades ago. The author of the classic Jamaican novel Song for Mumu, Barrett has lived and worked in West Africa for 43 years. Although he set up the first Cliff tour in Nigeria some unscrupulous promoters hijacked that event and created major problems for Cliff. In spite of this he and Barrett have always remained friends over the years. The following conversation between them took place in Port Harcourt capital of Nigeria's richest state after Cliff received the award from ECOWAS.

PETER TOSH

Peter Tosh (October 18, 1944 – September 11, 1987) was a pioneer reggae musician, as well as a trailblazing Rastafarian.
Born Winston Hubert McIntosh, young Peter grew up in Trenchtown, a slum within the Jamaican capital, Kingston. His short-fuse temper usually kept him in trouble, earning him the nickname Stepping Razor, after a song written by Joe Higgs, an early mentor. In 1973, Tosh was driving home with his girlfriend Evonne when his car was hit by another car driving on the wrong side of the road. The accident killed Evonne and severely fractured Tosh's skull. He survived, but became even harder to deal with. After Island Records president Chris Blackwell refused to issue his solo album in 1974, the volatile Tosh and Bunny Wailer left the Wailers, citing the unfair treatment they received from Blackwell, to whom Tosh often referred with the derogatory play on Blackwell's surname, 'Whiteworst'

The Minister of herb the hono -rebel PETER TOSH played to 60 sold out audiences on his 1979 North American tour with his then band 'Word SOUND & POWER" led by Sly Drum bar & Robbie Bass spear. In central park he drew a record 30,000 persons. Robert PAlmer wrote in the New York times that Tosh has become a really exceptional performer. His intentions seem as serious as ever & his show is a real show.Dramatic & riveting stage movement with distinctive songs
make Peter Tosh the most likely Jamaican reggae artiste to make it big in the US.

Peter reached out to the African diaspora in the European region telling Fred Rath of the U.K. Record Mirror in 1978 that England is a different place, in England there are more PURE BLACK people which is why he had to go there . He also said that the greatest improvement in the last 10 years is Black people's morale.
