INCEPTION 2010
USP: Perhaps the most high-brow action film ever made, Inception builds its thrills quite literally from its characters' imaginations. Location, gravity and the weather are all maleable as a team of gifted thieves try to con a wealthy daddy's boy into giving them the key to his fortune. Nolan keeps the pace moving so briskly that audiences barely have time to get confused, and sets a story of existential confusion against a backdrop of fantastical dream worlds.
MVP: Christopher Nolan, first for selling a major studio on the most expensive, least obviously commercial film premise in recent history, and then for delivering a blockbuster hit that enthralled audiences everywhere.
OMG: Arguably the film is one long OMG moment, but the sight of Paris streets folding into the sky like pages of a book is one that still boggles our mind.

1 | Sixth Sense...? Where is Sixth Sense?? |
Posted on Tuesday July 8, 2014, 14:35 by iainjames
Everyone is entitled to their own tastes in film so it's to be expected that there will be some differences of opinion with this list (I won't do what so many before me have done and tut about how typical it is that Empire readers fawn over Lucas/Nolan/Jackson so much - or spout expletives at the magazine/voters/society in general). BUT - one thing is certain. It's quite clear that M. Night Shyamalan has churned out such a colossal sack of utter excrement recently that people have forgotten just how good - and universally praised - Sixth Sense actually was. Please stop, Mr. 'Night'. For the sake of your early work and for the sake of all our sanities. Read More |

2 | Alright, Everyone Has an Opinion |
Posted on Sunday July 6, 2014, 23:38 by MrMockingjay
Hey, everyone has an opinion, there are gonna be people who dislike where films are, but I get the impression this is a poll, but if it 100% was I think we'd see films like The Dark Knight Rises at #1. i think we have a good list of films, but some like South Park and Transformers, making it higher than films like West Side Story and Hunger Games: Catching Fire, still gives me a shudder whenever I scroll across it. I'm glad to know the population still respects black and white and classics, which shows this list actually does have reliability to a degree, but I don't think we're ever going to come across a Top 100, let alone 301 list that doesn't get a whirlwind of hate, movies are opinion based, what you enjoy you enjoy :P Read More |

Posted on Saturday June 28, 2014, 02:16 by epgenius
My guess is both. This is a short list of films you idiots consider to be among the greatest of all time, higher than West Side Story: Prometheus; How to Train Your Dragon; Scott Pilgrim vs. the World; The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey; The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug; Kick-Ass; Scarface; Clerks; Frozen; Her; Les Miserables; Synecdoche, New York, Moon; The Master; Star Trek: Into Darkness; Eyes Wide Shut; The Hunger Games 1 & 2; Point Break... Are you proud of yourselves? Are you trying to sabotage this list, or are you all just really that retarded? A disturbing amount of this crap is still in theaters, or from the last two years -- most of which suck, or are hardly the best films of that exact length of time. Seriously, Prometheus?! Eyes Wide Shut?! Those movies are nearly unwatchable and, while some may have cult followings, do you really think these will stand the test of time? Do you think Moon is going to be shown every Christmas in 70 years as a family tradiRead More |

Where's Carlito's Way, Blow Out. Le Doulos, Army of Shadows, Le Cercle Rouge. Definitely favouring flavours of the last few years what's popular over quality. There's great films in there for sure, but what about all the great films that we have yet to see those films should be given some attention so people get interested instead of just including superhero movies which everybody knows about. Iron Man 3 I don't think so, I loved Shane Blacks screenwriting and I liked his directorial debut Kiss Kiss Bang Bang but I was definitely disappointed with his Iron Man 3 a few good early action sequences but apart from that it was flat, paint by numbers. I'd pick Ang Lee's Hulk over that and Del Toro's Hellboy 2 Golden Army. Read More |

What about "reader poll" is still confusing people or causing outrage? Think about the target audience, think about the cover art. There is nothing surprising here. All the silly talk about "important" film makes even less sense. Do we really have to go over what opinion means? Listing a bunch of historic landmarks in film because someone told you they are important is just as bad as picking 5 random movies that come to mind when someone says what are your favourites. I love the way people are saying 'how did this make it' or 'why is this film here' when if you look back, it is a readers poll. The demographic of Empire readers is huge and some (like me) are old arses who have read it for a long time. I personally enjoy seeing what people think are good films (or not in some cases) but please chill out people. Frozen is here because people liked the film, the same for the Dark Knight. Voted for by people who liked the films. So what, Woody Allen didn't score too great, or Kurosawa didn't rank high here. No-one cares. If you like a film, watch it. If you don't like a film, so what. People like all sorts of films and no two people are alike. I like The Godfather, and I also like Frozen. I LOVE The Incredibles and I admire Chaplin. Horses for courses guys and galls! Read More |

Sorry fans, but the headline is very misleading. This list has nothing to do with great films. This is actually a list of the movies that are the most popular at the moment with the people who were polled. As most know, there have been great films that were not particularly popular, and very popular films that were, well, bad. And of course a poll in the US in 2014 would almost completely ignore any movie made before 1960 and all movies made in other countries. Calling these the greatest movies ever is comparable to claiming the winners on American Idol are the greatest vocal talents in history. Read More |

This is the empire 's list of films such as any of us can make a wish list of films he loves. It surprised me how many people are actually dissatisfied with this list of movies . Personally, I 've found a lot of movies that I would not put it on the list while I wonder why some others are not placed . My top ten would be different than theirs , but in fact I like this list because I see that it is adapted to all populations, not just the film residual lumen in the age of black and white films and some classics of the seventies or non-English speaking countries . I have nothing against these films or these critics but I have against these self-styled who protest because a movie is on the list while others did not , who protest that the top ten is worst ever , to protest why the Dark Knight is in third place , etc. . Why a movie like The Dark Knight would not be in third place , why not be the first. People this is just one of thousands of movie lists . Tomorrow some respectable magazinRead More |

I'm with you frankie, but Empire have compiled lists of their own before, and will do again I'm sure; lists with a more critical, as opposed to a guilty pleasure leaning. Unfortunately it won't hold any more water than this list. People like what they like, no matter how well they word it. A good way to imagine their list is to simply look at the masterpiece page of the magazine every month. A lot of the high placed populist votes on this list have already been given the masterpiece tag in a full page spread in the magazine. Read More |

I have never met anyone in "real-life" who believes that The Dark Knight is one of the greatest films of all-time, so this begs the question, where are they? Also, as this was essentially a public poll, the sorry state of this list only shows that people don't really know cinema. The fact that Tokyo Story likely only just made it onto the list is a sad representation of the majority of its voters. Read More |

I think a more representative list of true "greatness" could have been generated by using a more mathematical approach. The nature of the human brain means that a film we've seen recently is more likely to register an impression than one that we've not seen for a while. Most people will have a "favourite" movie, or even a top 3, that will barely alter over time, but if asked to name your top 6, 7, or 10 etc and having to think on the spot it's more likely that something you've seen fairly recently would fill the lower voting places when put on the spot. Which is how, I hope, the likes of Iron Man 3 made this list. Surely noone out there put it at Number 1? Surely!? In future I reckon some sort of coefficient/points system that placed more emphasis on older rather than newer films would be the best way to reflect the "Greatest". Because, surely, a film that is recognised as a great 40, 50 or 60 years after it was made probably is more deserRead More |

L: LSJShez frankie, why remove the last 5 years worth of movies? You could look at the list by simply buying the mag and crossing out the new films, or write the list out long hand, leaving out what you think isn't eligible. Empire have done their own lists before, and dedicated a special magazine to them. Because these magazines are a few years old, they won't have new films in them; so give those a read. This is a populist vote, for films people enjoy watching. Seriously, if this shit insults you so much, you're reading the wrong magazine. enough but don't get excited. I only said what I'd like to see. Meaning I'd be interested in seeing a list without the more recent entries. There would still be 301 films so crossing some out as you suggest would be missing the point. I don't hate this list, it's as valid as any and probably does give an indication of what the majority hold as favourites (not best). I'm fine with that, just thought it would be nice for Empire to aRead More |

I did a masters degree in cinema history, and so far I have researched many of the best movies I've reviewed the list. I see this list is one of the worst list. In fact, this list of masterpiece films are classics, but many masterpiece classic, especially Europe and the Far East theater of the best examples in this list, unfortunately bulunmuyor.b can understand that because I think it pursing a significant amount of the age group of 18-25 people, and these people are naturally captain america, scott pilgrim, transformers, iron man movie, the hunger games movies like the last 5-10 years the films they have chosen .. I respect that, but everyone this selection the right to criticize because there are list of 301 best movie poll is if such a survey the following films must be: Battleship Potemkin, The Man with the Movie Camera, The Cranes Are Flying, The Color of Pomegranates, Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors, Ballad of a Soldier, Stalker, The Mirror, I am Cuba, nostalghia, Russian Ark, UgRead More |

I think this is a good list, if that's what people voted for then that's what it is. some people like the godfather some like transformers, films are just individual opinons. I don't care if the big commercial films or low budget as long as they are good. I wouldn't even have Godfather in my top 100 i find it boring, its impossible to please everyone with a list like this. Read More |

64 | Alternate Indie, classic and foreign film 301 list? BigWig exclusive perhaps.... |
Posted on Wednesday May 28, 2014, 20:04 by Mr.lovejoy
I couldn't help but notice that my fellow colleague's of passionate filmdom much like myself and Thracian_81, whilst very entertained and always appreciative of such a list as this, are always quite irate to see a multitude of great classic, indie and foreign names such as Herzog, Jarmusch and Murnau to name just the apex of those undeservedly excluded from even being mentioned. I submit to you (Empire) that you grace us with another 300 greatest movies list as chosen by you ( pressure pressure pressure!) which both actively searches for these forgotten greats and leaves out the big box office, Big-Wig types such as Skyfall at 45, C'mon, and urgh, Transformers (WTF!?!?! J.(F)C.!!!) So that the real talented visionaries, provocateurs and true artists of the indie corner or generation of old might be discovered by the next generation. There's too many dusty shelves on the film spectrum and I think it is your duty to ensure that it does not stay this way ... Might just be your article maRead More |

All of your opinions about everything are always wrong and less important than mine because physically i am more powerful than you. I enjoyed reading the article. There are people on here complaining that fans shouldn't be allowed to vote and that it should be left to the critics. What are you taking? The list was promoted as a fans vote, for films they love watching. Tastes vary. If you can't accept these points, then you shouldn't have taken part in the vote and should give up on the magazine. Empire has always catered to fans, so if pomposity is what you want, go read Little White Lies. Another poster wrote that for a more accurate vote, we should have listed our 301 favourite films, and let the counters work from that. Why? There's a simpler way for next time - Vote for your fave film, and that's it. One vote, one film. Read More |

This is a fascinating insight into Empire's demographic - so called film lovers! Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of all cinema - except romcoms and Twilight - but you know there is something wrong when "Avengers" is in the top 20. Entertaining as it is, it is still quite a bad film and I'm a massive Marvel fan. Sorry just to put that one out but I could go on forever here... Empire Strikes Back? C'mon! Read More |

Yes, there's an inevitability that lists like these will cause outrage and are heavily influenced by the fact that certain age groups don't vote, and other people - like me - simply cannot be arsed. HOWEVER, surely Empire needs to come out and put some disclaimers on certain entries as if to say - "yes, we can't believe this either". Skyfall being claimed as the "45th best film ever made" is just scandalous. A decent Bond film yes, but it isn't even the best Craig Bond flick! Casino Royale stuck at 160 rubs salt into the wound. And that's before you even start to ask "where's Goldfinger, Goldeneye, The Spy Who Loved Me etc..." Read More |

77 | The Worst 'Greatest Movies List' Empire has undergone. |
Posted on Wednesday May 28, 2014, 04:28 by JoshuatheFilmNerd
This list is terrible. A lot of great movies are shown here, but the rankings are obviously bad. You got incredible films like On the Waterfront, Andrei Rublev, The Graduate, Sunset Boulevard, Vertigo and Psycho decrease in ranking and some movies like Rosemary's Baby and La Dolce Vita not even on the list anymore. The 500 Movies list is better than this one in every way, because it's not dominated by Hollywood blockbusters and popcorn flicks. Oh well, I guess that's what happens when you leave the voting to the fans rather than the critics. And if you don't believe me, Transformers is on the list, a film panned by critics but loved by idiot teenagers. You'll see in a few years all these 2014 and 2013 films will decrease. Shame on you, people who voted on this list. As for you Empire, don't ever let the fans vote again. Read More |

Yeah well of course not much is gonna change of the voting is the same olf process. The way to get it more accurate is to ask each voter to list IN ORDER their top 301 films... not their top 10. Time consuming? Yes. Open for error. Sure. but a damn sight more accurate than any other poll ever done. Maybe one day a film outlet interested in such accuracy will launch this as a year long campaign to give people time to thing and put their films in a rough order at the every least. Now the results of that poll i would like to see. o offence to the films in this poll - but i do suspect gthat Star Wars may be on people's brains at the moment! Read More |

But Nolan probably isn't aware that 'The Matrix' exists, just like the man who made 'The Dark Knight' has never heard of 'The Man who shot Liberty Vallance'. This isn't a credible list of what the greatest films of all time are. Empire could take the time to think this through properly and produce an actual list. 119 | Why Pulp Fiction |
Posted on Tuesday May 27, 2014, 10:39 by tchapman977
Don't get me wrong, I love pulp fiction, I think it's a great film, but why are both that and Django Unchained above Reservoir Dogs, I can't be the only one that thinks Tarantino's first major film was his best. Read More |

Yeah, I can't say I agree with this list. However, if you are one of those film-lovers who just love the sheer entertainment of the movies, you can't fault this list. Glad to see Drive on the list, but so high up? No. The same goes for Inception and Gravity. I voted Apocalypse Now, Raging Bull, 2001: A Space Odyssey, I Am Cuba, The Godfather, 8 1/2, Come and See, Ikiru, Once Upon A Time In The West, and Kes. As for Forrest Gump? Too high, also. Shall we all agree that having ESB at #1 is one huge, collective yell to JJ not to balls up VIII? And where the hell is "Rollerball"? I sometimes feel I'm the only person in the world flying the flag for this wonderful film. Read More |

Fellowship was bettered in some ways by The Two Towers, but it's definitely the best of the three. If this one hadn't been so magnificent, the others would have been pointless. Read More |

124 | MVP Luke Skywalker? Yoda, more like! |
Posted on Tuesday May 27, 2014, 08:45 by Belisarius0365
Assuming you were able to prevent 'Jedi Knights' from voting more than once, this isn't really that surprising a choice. However, Hamill can't act, his career best performance being the Joker in the Batman video games, and Buzz Lightyear's 'Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo' is WAY more masculine than Hamill's shrill shriek! Nope, my vote for MVP has to be Yoda. Most memorable new character, trains Luke in the ways of the Force, correctly predicts that Vader will kick Luke's ass if he takes him on before he's fully trained and let's not forget lifting an x-wing out of a swamp with his mind! I'm feeling silly for not having voted for one film! Even you're comment of us readers having voted in our 'hundreds and thousands' got me thinking, "should I have eliminated Braveheart from my list?!" I always go with my initial thoughts in this sort of thing, otherwise I'd spend a ridiculous amount of time refining my entry. Read More |
