In chase of upgrade: serfdom for woodworkers?

Aliaksandr Lukashenka has ordered to ban resignation of employees until woodworking companies of Bellesbumprom Concern complete upgrade projects.

“Such giant woodworking projects are directly related to our economy’s diversification. I made the decision to prevent us from depending on big brother [Russia], the West or Americans, to make us concentrate on our own resources: construction materials, cement, agriculture, potassium fertilizers and woodworking,” state-owned news agency BelTA quotes Lukashenka.

Siarhei Ivanou, Bellesbumprom Deputy Chief, made an attempt to convince the head of state that the enterprises had not been ready for the work of such kind. In his opinion, disregarding deadlines results from the weakness of Belarusian project organisations.

“In this case, why did you bring me a decree on deadlines’ agreement if you were not ready? You should have finished in 2009, now is 2012… If you were not able and ready, we should have invited five or ten foreigners, it would have been cheaper,” Lukashenka parried.

It is also the workers who are to blame for blowing deadlines, the president believes. He therefore stressed the need of complying with harsh labour discipline.

”Draft the decree. Employee resignation is banned until the upgrade and renovation projects are completed. Employees will not be able to quit their jobs without permission of a company chief,” Lukashenka said. “Therefore, no resignations starting from tomorrow, 1 December,” he demanded.
