Dulles Metrorail - Silver Line Metrorail Service Begins

Silver Line Metrorail Service Begins

Phase 1 of the Silver Line is now open, providing rail service connecting downtown Washington with Tysons Corner and Reston.

More than 32,000 people used the five new stations along the Silver Line on opening day, July 26 and another 19,000 on Sunday, July 27. On July 28, the first day of weekday rush hour service, ridership at the Wiehle –Reston East Station ranked 12th in ridership in the Metro system.

The four Tysons stations are: McLean, Tysons Corner, Greensboro and Spring Hill.

While there have some minor kinks in the generally smooth operations, riders and those who built the system had big smiles on their faces as they rode the first trains which rolled after more than 50 years in the making.

Built by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, which turned the new line over to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority several weeks ago, the new line runs from East Falls Church to Reston with four stops in Tysons Corner. From the Wiehle-Reston East Station the Silver Line runs through Tysons, Arlington, downtown Washington to Largo, Md. Riders boarding trains in Reston and Herndon can go to the District or to the end of the line in Largo without transferring.
