Lawn

[Area Photo]

It is considered an honor at the University to live in one of the prestigious Lawn rooms. Located in Mr. Jefferson's original buildings, these rooms are truly in the center of the University. The setting is the beautiful Lawn, probably the most popular place for students to relax, study and play. There are rooms for 54 students.

The rooms are furnished with a bed, desk and rocking chair, and include a sink. Additionally, most rooms have a fireplace. No air conditioning, kitchen or study lounges are available; however, students can find whatever is needed just a few steps from their doors.

Applicants for residence on the Lawn must be undergraduate degree candidates in their final year of study at the University. Students enrolled in the joint College of Arts and Sciences/Curry School Master of Teaching program may apply in either their 4th or 5th year, but not both. Students in the joint College/Batten School Master of Public Policy program may only apply in their 4th year. If it is determined after the start of the fall semester that a student will not graduate in May of that academic year, his/her Lawn room will be offered to the next student on the waiting list. Students must use their Lawn room as their primary University residence (e.g., the residence where the student sleeps a clear majority of nights while classes are in session) if selected. In addition, it is expected that a student selected to live on the Lawn will not study abroad during that academic term (exclusive of J-Term).

Students who wish to apply to live on the Lawn can find the form on Housing & Residence Life's Applications page, under the "Returning Undergraduates" category, starting in mid-November.

Notice to Lawn Residents: Please do not bring firewood from home! Due to the risk of infestation by the Emerald Ash Borer, all firewood must be purchased locally.

Due to State Fire Marshal requirements, lofts and other furniture in Lawn rooms must comply with the Lawn and Range Loft Furniture Guidelines, in addition to the general Housing & Residence Life loft standards.
