Temperatures drop further in Baguio, MM

MANILA, Philippines - Temperatures dropped further in Baguio City and Metro Manila yesterday even as light to moderate rains are expected in some parts of the country today, according to the state weather bureau. 

The temperature in Metro Manila reached 20.7 degrees Celsius at around 5 a.m. yesterday, the coldest in the metropolis since the northeast monsoon set in last October, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.

In Baguio City, the temperature dipped to 12 degrees Celsius between 2 and 5 a.m. yesterday, the coldest so far in the summer capital. 

Based on PAGASA’s climatological data, the all-time lowest temperature in Metro Manila was recorded on Feb. 4, 1987 and Dec. 30, 1988 at 15.1 degrees Celsius, while at the Port Area in Manila, the lowest temperature was felt on Jan. 11, 1914 at 14.5 degrees Celsius.

On Feb. 1, 1962, the lowest temperature of 14.6 degrees Celsius was recorded at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Pasay City, while Sangley Point in Cavite recorded its lowest temperature at 18 degrees Celsius on Feb. 2, 1982. 

In Tuguegarao City in Cagayan, the coldest temperature was on Jan. 10, 1949 at 12.1 degrees Celsius.

In Baguio City, the coldest temperature recorded was 6.1 degrees Celsius in January 1961. 

PAGASA said the northeast monsoon – cold winds from China and Siberia – usually peaks in January and February. 

Meanwhile, the northeast monsoon will bring cloudy skies with light to moderate rains over Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan), the Bicol region and the Visayas in the next 24 hours. 

Metro Manila and the regions of Cagayan Valley, Ilocos, Cordillera and Central Luzon will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with light rains. 

The rest of the country will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms.
