Rampant Maguire wraps up UK title
Stephen Maguire
Stephen Maguire completed a stunning 10-1 victory over David Gray to win the UK Championship.

Maguire led 8-1 after the first session of the 19-frame final, ending it with back-to-back breaks of 110 and 131.

And the 23-year-old Scot, who took the European title last March, won the next two in the evening to clinch the title.

Gray suffered the embarrassment of coming out without his chalk for the final session, and play was delayed while it was brought out to him.

His fate had already been sealed when he made some crucial early misses and then managed just 43 points in the last five frames of the afternoon.

Maguire's momentum started to build when, with the score at 1-1, Gray missed the final green while clearing up.

Instead, Maguire took the advantage, and he never looked back after going 3-1 up when Gray missed an easy red as he led 41-1 in fourth frame.

I was just hoping I wasn't a one-hit wonder - I've proved I wasn't so I'm chuffed
Stephen Maguire
He wrapped up the victory in style with a break of 122 in the final frame.

"I played good all week. I'm just speechless," Maguire told BBC Sport.

When asked what his ambitions for the season were, Maguire added: "That was it!

"I won the first tournament last year and was just hoping I wasn't a one-hit wonder. I've proved I wasn't so I'm chuffed."

Gray, who hit a maximum 147 break against Mark Selby in his opening match, admitted he had been outplayed.

"I missed a few early on and from then on he just ran away with it. He was playing brilliant stuff," he said.

"I could have been 3-1 up instead of 3-1 down then I had a bad run.

"Once he got his confidence there was no stopping him.

"It was a bit of a nightmare but coming into this tournament I'd have settled for what's happened to me. I've had a good week."
