Nuclear

The Enel Group operates 11 nuclear sections (reactors)  in 7 plants, with a total net efficient capacity of 5,370 MW and a net generation that amounted to 40,591 GWh in 2013.

In Spain the Group manages, in 5 different plants, 6 pressurised water reactors (PWR) and one boiling water reactor (BWR), which interrupted its operations in December 2012. In Slovakia, four pressurised water reactors work with Vodo-Vodyanoi Energetichesky Reactor (VVER) technology at two plants.

In order to increase the sustainability and efficiency of its power generating facilities, the Enel Group makes investments and performs operations aimed to achieve various improvements. Ordinary and extraordinary management and modernisation activities at nuclear plants involve in particular:

  • Reduction of direct and indirect environmental impact;
  • protection from radiation;
  • responsible water management;
  • hazardous and radioactive waste management, analysis and characterisation;
  • exhausted fuel management, analysis and characterisation;
  • management, analysis and characterisation of discharge to water and waste water

Operations at nuclear plantsmanaged by the Enel Group in Spain and Slovakia are in line with the best global practices in this field. Processes defined in the guidelines of INPO (Institute of Nuclear Power Operations), WANO (World Association of Nuclear Operators), EPRI (Electric Power Research Institute) and IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) are the common basis for all the companies operating nuclear power within the Enel Group.
