Selby won a tight opening frame only to see McGill respond thanks to a break of 54 in the second, before class began to tell as the reigning world champion raced into a 4-1 lead.

However, McGill produced breaks of 66, 88 and 65 to level the match at 4-4 and send it into what would prove a scrappy decider, won by Selby.

"Phew glad to get that match out the way such a struggle! Hopefully get good rest for tomorrow," Selby later tweeted.

John Higgins won the first and third frames of his clash with Peter Ebdon but lost the rest to go crashing out as his opponent produced a run of heavy scoring, the highlight coming in frame six with a 133 clearance.

Following his 5-2 victory, Ebdon will face Selby in the last-16, a game which takes place on Thursday evening.

The afternoon session was completed with a 5-3 victory for Martin Gould over Ashley Carty.

In the evening, Judd Trump and Neil Robertson opened their respective campaigns with emphatic 5-0 victories.

Robertson didn't have to be at his best to beat Fergal O'Brien but Trump was in rare form as he signed off with breaks of 104 and 103 in a comprehensive success at the expense of Michael Holt.

Next up for Trump is a clash with Gould, a player he beat on both occasions they met in 2014.

Stephen Maguire raced into a 4-0 lead over David Gilbert before losing three frames on the bounce to his 33-year-old opponent.

However, the former UK Championship winner dug deep with an 80 break to seal a 5-3 success.

Xiao Guodong edged past Liam Highfield 5-4, winning the last two frames to earn a meeting with Robertson, while Mark King beat Barry Hawkins 5-3 in the last match to finish.

Defending champion and world number one Ding Jinhui begins his defence on Thursday against Ryan Day, while Ronnie O'Sullivan will face Mark Davis.
