Sync Across Kindle Devices & Apps

Whispersync allows you to synchronise your books, personal documents, and games across supported devices and apps.

Sync Your Books & Personal Documents Automatically

Whispersync for Books allows you to stop reading on one device and pick up where you left off on another device, as long as both devices are registered to the same Amazon account. Whispersync for Books is enabled by default.

Whispersync allows you to view the bookmarks, highlights, and notes that were created on other devices registered to the same Amazon account. Additionally, Whispersync automatically syncs your last page read and annotations for personal documents that are converted to Kindle format.

To ensure Whispersync is enabled, or to disable Whispersync:

  1. Go to Manage Your Content and DevicesManage Your Content and Devices (Amazon.in full site).
  2. Select the Settings tab.
  3. Under Device Synchronisation (Whispersync Settings), set Whispersync Device Synchronisation to ON or OFF.

To avoid syncing errors:

  • Keep your device connected to a wireless network to allow automatic syncing across your Fire & Kindle devices and Kindle reading apps. If you put your device into sleep mode instead of turning it off, you will not disable the wireless connection.
  • Always return to the Home screen on your device when you're finished reading.
  • To view your bookmarks, highlights, and notes on other devices, you also need to back up your annotations. See Back Up Your Bookmarks, Notes & Highlights.

Back Up Your Bookmarks, Notes & Highlights

Automatically back up your bookmarks, notes, and highlights to your content library in the Cloud, so you can view them on other Fire & Kindle devices and Kindle reading apps that are registered to the same Amazon account. Your notes and highlights are also counted in Popular Highlights.

Annotations Backup is automatically enabled with Kindle Fire devices, Kindle for Android, and Kindle for Windows 8, and cannot be disabled. With Kindle eReaders and other Kindle reading apps, check to see if Annotations Backup is enabled.

To back up your bookmarks, notes, and highlights on your Kindle eReader or other Kindle reading app:

  1. Ensure Whispersync is enabled. See Sync Your Books & Personal Documents Automatically.
  2. From your Kindle eReader or Kindle reading app, go to the Home screen, select the Menu button or icon, and then select Settings. If you have a Kindle Touch or Kindle Paperwhite, select Reading Options.
  3. Make sure Annotations Backup is ON.
